Equinox 900 A Few Thoughts

thanks Mark for the thorough review, own an 800 for a couple years now, considering a 900 but will hold for now given technology in detectors is moving so fast, will probably make the expense in a few years...helps me though in tracking tech developments.
Probably a good idea. The 800 is a great machine. Mark
Thanks for all the info Mark. I’ve been using the 900 for about three weeks and I’m loving it so far. I’m not crazy about the headphones and might even go old-school wired with an adapter. I love the Gray Ghost Ultimates.
Replied to your post about battery life. Not sure how long you've been at it but IMO there is nothing more aggravating than being tethered to a detector. I did see Gray Ghost offers a transmitter to wireless headphone set up. But like Minelab's setup it seems to have a proprietary signal which would negate the use of earbuds in warmer weather.

I used to detect about 10 years ago with wired and I have to agree wireless is so much nicer.

I'm not a "water hunter, not worth it around here ! I could see it would be fun too, I do watch some water vids now and then.

I don't find in water hunting fun at all. In fact, it's a major PITA! :) Dirt hunting is relaxing. With in water hunting, it's like I'm fighting everything.

The only reason I water hunt, is because the rewards are far greater than dirt hunting.

Yes>>>

Why be on your knees digging silver, when you can stand and dig gold!!!!!

I'd say that depends on where you're doing your dirt hunting.

Having said that, I tried beach hunting for the first time this year and loved it. Can't wait to go back and do it again. Just wish I lived closer to a beach!

With having everything tethered to me, and fighting everything, I forgot about the advantage of not having to constantly get down and back up. Even with the fighting though, I find in water hunting to be way more worth it.

I agree it depends on the dirt site, but I'm just not very interested in digging up coins anymore (not even silver). I was probably spoiled though, because a couple of years ago, I came across an epic site that produced 37 silvers, and almost zero trash, in three short hunts. It was a once in a lifetime site, and after that, every dirt site since, is kind of "meh".

In the water where I am, almost every signal I get is jewelry of some sort. Problem is, about 75% of it isn't gold. It's mainly TC rings and cheap chains. Oh well, I still love finding those rings, and still prefer in water hunting much better than dirt hunting.

When you say beach hunting Rattlehead, do you mean in the sand, in the water, or both? I only hunt in the water, because there is way too much trash on the beach for my liking. Then again, the beaches here aren't sand. More like a fine gravel lol. Anything valuable that is dropped, is immediately seen by the person who dropped it, or the next person that walks by. If I had sand beaches, I probably would hunt them.

I was mostly referring to historical dirt sites like those with rare and sometimes priceless Civil War relics, but I don't think I'll ever get tired of digging silver coins. About a decade ago, I got on a pretty large cache with big silver coins and even some gold coins. You'd think I'd be spoiled, but no, even digging a plain old mercury dime still gets me excited.

On my trip to the beach last September, I hunted the wet sand out to maybe knee high in the water. It was Myrtle Beach SC. Lots of shell in that sand there, but it wasn't too bad. I really enjoyed it. So much so, that I recently purchased my own scoop, diving boots and headlamp. On my first trip, I had borrowed a stainless 9.5" wide T-rex scoop from my buddy. It worked ok, but was too heavy for me. Had my shoulder and arm hurting after only about an hour. So, I ordered a smaller 6.5" wide scoop with a carbon fiber handle from steveg. The entire thing only weighs 3.2 lbs. I ordered the dive boots because on my first beach hunting trip I was wearing crocs, and those damn things rubbed blisters all over my feet.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to doing more beach hunting in 2024.

Great review Mark! The Equinox 900 is an excellent machine for sure! We have a nice discount on them till the end of December as well!
It's true! Just picked up an Equinox 900 as an upgrade to my Equinox 600. Now all I need is a little warm weather!

Same thing happens to my feet when wearing cross and many other water shoes. I recommend dive socks or ( Yes I said it) women's ankle nylons. Cheap , work great. Downside is they don't last long.

Thanks for the tip. I'm willing to try anything to avoid another round of feet blisters. That sh!t was painfull.
