Does A Surface Barber Count???

When you first sent me a text the other day telling me that you are out I thought wow it's cooking outside. Once again what a great write up thanks for sharing the pictures with me first. The token definitely cleaned up nice and yes the Barber dime counts.

It definitely was an uncomfortable day, but it’s easier to bear when the good finds start showing up! Always glad to give you a sneak peak on the finds - I always know you’ll appreciate the excitement that goes with a unique find!

Great finds. Waiting to find a barber anything. Guess I better keep my eyes open.

Thanks Reelfoot! Barbers aren’t easy finds…I know in my area, I’m lucky if I come across one a year - like I said in the post, this was the first Barber I came across in almost 2 years. But don’t get discouraged - definitely keep swinging the detector, and with a site with the right history, you’ll get one! But in the meantime, it’s apparently worth it to keep the Mark I Eyeballs peeled, just in case ;)

Some great finds to go with a great story. And here's a theory. The guy who stopped and told you he and his buddy had no luck detecting the area was simply trying to get you to be convinced that it had been covered so you'd leave it for them. Perhaps the surface Barber was even a dropped find from one of their hunts. And now, it's yours:shock::cool3:

Thanks Silverhorse! I actually had thought the same thing…I really wonder if the Barber was accidentally dropped by another detectorist working the site at some point before my hunt. And yes, it definitely wouldn’t surprise me if he was trying to “scare” me off by planting the seed that the site was already picked over. Didn’t work, but can’t fault him for trying, I guess :D

What a great hunt! Nice job staying with a good site. That token is absolutely terrific, and that Barber definitely counts!

Thanks TS! I’m hoping to get over there again tomorrow, too…I’m sure there are more goodies to find!

Very Nice!!!! Congrats!!!!

Thanks Digger RJ!

Good play-by-play. Good pix. I like the in-situ shots . Nice job !

I appreciate it, Tom! Thanks for reading!

Heck yeah a surface find counts, all day long. Congrats on the Barber dime, Ihp and super cool token. Thats awesome. And nice write up as usual Ben. My last 3 hunts I sweated my behint off also for a few wheaties and not much else. I have had two sunbaked surface finds this year a Merc and an Ihp. Different sites and months apart and you bet they count. Gotta love the easy ones. Good luck on your return. Mark

Thanks Mark! I’m used to the occasional surface find in the farm fields I hunt, but it always seems surreal finding something that old on the surface in other places - being essentially a construction site in this case certainly helped, but still it was a shock! I’ll never forget finding an 1878 IHP sitting on the ground at a public grassy lot - beautiful green patina, but it had a ding from a lawn mower blade…even the ding was old enough to have a full patina! Just a weird juxtaposition for a coin that old to be sitting on the ground with cars whizzing by, and suffering wounds from power mowers! Anyways, agreed, it’s no fun sweating buckets hunting for little to no finds, but it sure gets easy to ignore the heat once the goodies start popping up! :cool3:

Surface Barber sounds like a fancy name for the guy that mows the grass. Fantastic finds... AGAIN!!

Congrats on the goodies. I guess it counts. At a house tear down my buddy found a surface Barber dime a few minutes after he dug one about a month ago. The lucky cuss dug a Merc too after the surface find! I didn't find a silver. We also dug 5 clad Kennedy halves. The halves had to have been buried on purpose. No silver halves found though :(

Now that is an awesome hunt!

Must be nice to have Barbers just sitting pretty and waiting for you on surface. :)

Love that old token - very cool you were able to track down the store.

Congrats on some super-cool finds - HH!
