We had a flood in 1934 that wiped out many many houses, buildings and towns along a local river. What do you supposed happened to the coins? Would they keep traveling in the current? Or sink? There must be thousands of coins somewhere along the river bank or in the river. Where would you start looking?

If the coins were already under the ground the flood probably wouldn't have done more then cause them to sink deeper.

If they were on the surface who knows where they ended up. I don't think there would be a main area of concentration and even if there was it would be extremely difficult to find.

I'd recommend finding out where the old buildings used to be before they were wiped out. Search around this area. This is a good opportunity because since the buildings are no longer standing it's unlikely the site has been hunted already. Try to find old pictures of the area before the flood. Start looking on the internet and then try your local library.
Since most of the coins were probably already buried it's not likely the flood moved them.

Good luck and post your finds!!

I would guess that coins and other artifacts that were in houses and other buildings would be scattered along the water route as the buildings broke apart and their contents fell into the water. Just like ocean waves (especially during storms) can wash objects ashore (shipwreck items), I'm sure the force of a rain-swollen, raging river can do the same thing. In a nutshell, I would guess that there are coins, jewelry, and all manner of household items scattered and buried the entire length of any river that has ever flooded and carried buildings and their contents somewhere farther downstream.

Maybe there are historical photos that show the location(s) of some of these buildings and where they came to rest after being carried downstream. That, at least, would be a starting point.
