Out door knocking and snagged a permission for an old 1840s abandon farm w/outbuildings, crumbling stone foundations and all, just my style! Only spent a few hours swinging to test for old dirt, got a jumpy 70s signal on my manticore but deep, (love those deep beeps), popped the plug and this gorgeous bucket lister popped up! Union Staff Civil War Uniform Coat Button w/ Michigan State Seal (officer's button). Too darn hot/humid to continue and as General McArthur said "I shall return". 😄

Well done. IS it a crowned button or flat? The one I found during a street tear out had the exact front on it. It now resides at our local historical museum. Congrats.

All finds that day, parasol thingie, some kind of deer motif escutcheon maybe, women's compact. The button is crowned, full shank. When I saw the scoville mark, got excited, after cleaning, the flag man within the shield sealed the deal as an officer's button and the state seal is unmistakable.

Cool! How deep?

about 8 inches. Been researching to locate the possible owner, based on property ownership around/post-civil war, narrowed it down to 2 men, both were Sergeants, being non-commissioned officers, this button would be a fit. The pic below was Sgt. Walter Maxson, 26th Michigan Infantry, KIA in 1864, battle of the Wilderness, Va., buried in local cemetery near where the Maxson's lived here near me. The other, no picture yet, was Sgt. Abram Maxson, 9th Michigan Infantry, passing away in 1902. Hopefully I can confirm either one.

That's awesome! I've found only one Michigan seal CW button and was able to identify the soldier because he build the house where I found it.... One of my favorite finds.

Quite a bit of plating left on it too! A dip in lemon juice might make it look purdy

you are so correct, cue tips and lemon juice and a quick rinse in baking soda bath and much better. Came out really nice.

I have a guy who is a button nut. Especially war buttons . He is bugging the shit out of me for this button and a few others. Are they worth something worth mentioning? I'm a coin nut and float copper but not so much buttons.

don't go in blind, depending on condition these have some value, a non-dug button like mine in super great shape just sold for $225.00
