Civil War Hat Pin???

this isnt a detector find, but when i was a kid my parents collected carnival glass, so we would frequent antique stores. well, this one we went to alot had this and when i asked how much it was the man said i could just have it. it looks like civil war, maybe the 8th regiment of louisiana??? any help witha better id would be great. thanks!

could very well be....is there any makers mark or anything on the back? one that comes to mind would be 8th regiment L company out of new york..they where a heavy artillery regiment..ill see if i can come up with anything for you.
 
no markings on the back....just 2 sharp little tack things at the muzzle of each gun and the center post is entirely threaded with a blunt tip and a weird looking nut on it. i'd post a pic but the new puppy chewed my camera cord this morning....guess its better than chewing the camera itself...hopfully i can get a replacement tonight. there is some flaking of the gold coating and the pin appears to be made out of copper....its got that look to it where its flaked and its pretty soft.
 
It's a collar device, enlisted mans. Spanish-American war era, Eighth Infantry regiment, Company L.
Nice shape, too. As you noticed these are prone to losing the finish rather easily.
