I was at an artifact show recently and found some good deals on some buttons and a buckle the one was supposedly smashed to make poker chips, both don't have writing on the back. Can anyone tell me if these are Union or confederate or if there from a certain state. thanks for the help.

They both look like late 1700's to early 1800's civilian flat buttons.

It is still possible (however impossible to prove) they could have been from soldiers clothes brought from home.

Thanks they looked older than civil war I only payed 5 for the belt buckle and like 2 for the buttons or something like that I think

I agree that they are early civilian buttons, not military. However, we find civilian buttons at Civil War sites which shows that many soldiers wore clothes brought from home, especially Confederate troops. Firsthand accounts from soldiers at the time tell of the vast variety of clothing worn by groups that were ill equipped with clothing. No way to prove that these buttons are related to the Civil War but they are very nice old buttons nonetheless.

Kinda hard to say, either way. The Confederates did have to improvise their uniforms, using civilian buttons. That's why you can sometimes find flat, flower buttons in areas troops were.
