Churches

Never tried it myself. Although it would depend on where the property was.
In the UK the church own vast amounts of property, all over the place.

I wouldn't even consider asking to detect around the immediate vicinity of a church. Cemeteries are a definite No No

That's a good question PikinanGrinnin

I wonder if it easier to get permission if you are a member or not, or just walk up to the pastor's house and ring the bell.

I get a yes about 80% of the time. I've found many great finds at churches.

My experience with churches has not been good. I suppose if you were a member you could probably receive permission. But so far I've gotten only dirty looks and sometimes threats should I "decide to do so on the sly" in the words of the pastors I've asked.

Good luck!

HI,
MOST PRIESTS OR PASTORS ARE VERY NICE AND ALWAYS GIVE ME THE THUMBS UP.I ALWAYS OFFER TO RETURN ANY PERSONAL ITEMS SUCH AS WEDDING RINGS,KEYS ETC I THINK THEY SEE THAT AS HONESTY ON MYPART AND MAYBE THAT SWAYS THEM INTO GIVING ME THE GO AHEAD?WHETHER YOU DECIDE TO TURN IN ANY RINGS IS UP TO YOU.I HAVE NOT FOUND ANY SIGNIFICANT INITIALIZED WEDDING BANDS OR CLASS RINGS THAT WOULD DETERMINE OWNERSHIP ON CHURCH GROUNDS.SO,THE FEW RINGS I HAVE FOUND I KEPT.PLUS THEY WERE DEEP SO,CHANCES ARE THE OWNERS OF THOSE RINGS ARE NO LONGER AROUND.
HOPE THIS HELPS YOU IN ANY WAY.

Carol, dress nice, walk up with a smile on your face (leave your detector in the car), exude confidence, and when you ask permission be sure to immediately say you'll be on the lookout for lost personal items that will be returned to the owners.

Sounds like something Bruce Weber would say to a potential recruit........

Hold on, there, Beerdoodle! I may live in Champaign, but I graduated from Purdue, and therein lies my heart.

I make people mad here with this riddle: Why are the Illinois colors blue and orange?

Answer: Because they had last pick.

(non-sports fans will have no idea what we're talking about).

Thanks for the chuckle!
