Well, I spent about two hours basically cleaning the yard with my detector yesterday. I am really trying to bite the bullet and pull the trash out of the area. I know that there are good coins here but I will have to work to find them.

I found a new spot along our street (which is a coutry street, not a city street) that had a lot less trash and scrap iron than the rest of the yard, so I hunted diligently in that area. I had alot signals that resulted in everything from old nails to wire to tuna fish cans. The only worthwhile find in two hours last night was a 1994 clad dime! I was tired of digging and it what getting dark so I quit for the night.

The photo of the misc stuff is from my most recent hunt. The other photo of the token and coins are the keepers so far from my yard. The wheats were my first two finds and the token you have already seen in my other post. And then there is the dime. I am determined to get some old silver here!

My goal for the year, if nothing else, is to find a Barber or older type coin. If I can do that, I will be happy!

HH All!

Some more finds from the yard

Hmmm... I am not sure how to start this one. I had an OK night in the yard. I managed to find another wheat cent - 1951 D. I also found a belt buckle, a small brooch and a small copper (I think) compact. Normally I would elaborate on these but my other find was, well, very unexpected and just wierd.

I was hunting near where I found the first two coins in the yar and I got a good signal and I dug. The target seemed to be good size but the depth indicator was shallow and I thought "well mabey it is a jar full of coins!" and I kept digging. I came to a large rusty steel plate and went to get my large shovel to remove it. This is where things got dicey. As I was digging around this piece of metal, I was tapping on it to find the edge and it sounded hollow deep in the ground and then, it broke through! At this point I was just shocked and didnt know what to think except GET THE CAMERA! So I did and the rest of the story is in pictures...I still dont know exactly what it is. Perhaps and old drainage or septic tank? Keep in mind this is from a house built around 1900-1910 by my best guess. It is quite deep and full of muck but the top and sides are steel but there is also some brick along the rim. I stuck the camera inside with the flash because I could not see in. It has alot of water in it.

So now I have a bigger problem-I have a deep deep hole in my yard now. I put some plywood over it for now. I am not sure yet how I will fix this! I guess it will have to be uncovered and filled.

Very interesting. Did it smell?

No, actually it didnt. I figured it would have too! It is really quite large, I stuck the shovel down as far as I could and got nothing but muck-no bottom and the inside is probably about 4 feet across.

Old Septic Tank

I Beleive It's A Old Abandoned Septic Tank.i Used To Work In This Field And Thats What It Looks Like To Me.you can see the old clay pipe feeding into the tank filled with roots.usually cracks in the clay drain pipe and roots growing into pipe caused the system to fail.be Prepared To pump it out and Start Filling With Dirt.a Real Hazard Especially If Small Kids Are Around.

Well, I supposee it is a good thing that I found it even if it did turn out to be a problem. I keep thinking about how many times we drove the lawn tractor over that spot and what if the propane tank was 6 feet West of where it is now??? That would really have been an issue! The cover on this tank was very brittle and only about 6-8 inches below the ground. Jeez...

Yup

May Have Been A Blessing In Disguise So To Speak.it Was An Accident Waiting To Happen.maybe You Won't Have To Pump It Out?you Could Slowly Back Fill It And The Water Will Just Be Displaced By The Sand Or Dirt.lucky about the propane tank.you woulda had a 1000 gallon submarine there:lol:
Anyways, Keep Us Posted As To What You End Up Doing.
Good Luck!

We have a large pile of sand that is leftover from the construction so right now the plan is to open up the hole and fill it with a Bobcat. I will post some pictures of that when it happens. I will start a new thread for that story in another area on the forum; I will put a link on this thread.

You found your septic tank alright.. whatever you do don't fall in you won't be a happy camper... ;)
