Well finally got unpacked and caught my breath. We got home Sunday night and right back to work Monday morning.
My son and I had a great time in Culpeper. We were hunting the south end of the Excelsior camp. My 5th CW relic hunt and my sons first. I must say I was impressed at my boys ability to hang in there and swing a detector for 10 hours a day, 3 days in a row. He made a couple good finds, a Bulls eye Rosette, dropped Colt pistol bullet, flat Button and a lead pencil that a soldier fashioned out of a bullet. He was stoked to be able to hold a piece of history in his hand. We also had the opportunity to dig a trashpit together and although we did not find any keepers we did find enough to possible put together a bottle or two for display.
I stuck to an area that was filled with iron and was rewarded for my hard work. I found my first Gardner (dropped) as well as 2 54 cal. 3 ringers, 3 flat buttons, a 3 way gun tool, a knapsack hook and the hammer off a musket. I found the faceplate from the lock and when showing it to another hunter he pulled the second section out of his pouch and gave it to me, THEN at the relic display, a friend saw the 2 parts I had and told me he found the main body to the lock! All 3 parts were located in about a 3 acre area!
It was some hard hunting since these were mostly fields and there was a lot of stubble and had some pretty hot areas. Also a High tension powerline and a "Invisible" dog fence added to the hardships.
There were many nice relics pulled out of the ground on this hunt such as a Louisiana plate as well as a button, CS Tongue, more than a few Gardners, a couple breast plates, US Box plate, 1744 1 Reale and several large cents.
One of the best parts of this hunt was meeting old friends and catching up on finds made since the last hunt. We both made some new friends and I even got a killer deal on a new CTX3030 while I was there!
We are both ready to do it again this spring.
