Archeologists found an unexploded artillery shell 2ft below the surface at Little Round Top. They were using metal detectors when they found it. From the battle in 1863.

Wow, that's interesting!

I've never metal detected a CW site myself, since there aren't any in my area. But I'm curious about this quote from the article: "...it's a federal offense to dig or metal detect for these items by the general public." What is meant by "these items" - civil war relics in general, or specifically unexploded artillery? And what is the basis of the statement?

Not sure but I think archies are legal to dig under federal law. As far as the items, it encompasses just about all of the things they find.

They're referring to it being illegal for the general public to detect on federally reserved land.
