Would it be from world war 1 or 2?

I was in Army boot camp in the early '60's. They issued those as part of the Army "green" uniform. They were solid, but not too thick, brass. When we finally got our first paycheck ($96), most of us went to the PX to buy the two-piece versions...as they shined easier for inspections.

That's not to say that they don't go back to the war years. Just my experience.

That's still the modern design... I got one, crap brass one in boot camp back in 2001.
