A couple of mornings ago I was heading to a job in my work van driving from my house down our street toward the main road two blocks down.

I was in the second block when I saw ahead a dove walking down the road away from me. From experience I knew it would fly as I approached, but I slowed down anyway and warily watched to be sure.

Just before I got to the bird I slowed even more and I saw that it was a Homing Pigeon and had a band around each leg.

It was one of the most beautiful little birds I have ever seen and it just kept slowly walking along as if it was a normal event for it to be threatened by a big black plumber's van.

I stopped the van and watched for a moment and when I saw that it wasn't going to fly I got out to get a closer look and determine if the bird was hurt.

As I approached it warily walked off the road and around a bush in a yard.

I didn’t want to panic the bird, so I walked around the bush in the opposite direction for a better look .

It kept close to the sheltering bush, but I couldn’t see anything that might be a problem.

I watched for a moment and then walked around the other way to have another vantage point.

As I got a bit closer the tiny creature took flight.

It flew along the edge of the road and my heart threatened to stop as it reached the end of the street and flew low across the main road only seconds ahead of a speeding truck.

I saw it gain altitude and disappear into trees on the opposite side of the road

I breathed a sigh of relief and wished the beautiful little creature Godspeed!

May your day provide you with such joy as I experienced on that day,

CJ

Good on you, that's a nice story. I like to think I would do the same, but I'm an HVAC guy and you know how we are.:D

I'll add a story here as I'm reminded by this one.
Many years ago we were pulling some old rooftop units and condensers off a roof and adding some new ones. So I'm on the ground unrigging the stuff coming down. There is a lull in the action and we don't know why. I'm calling up to the roof and they are not answering. omg what's going on? it's taking to long. Finally they are at the edge of the roof and say OK were ready. "READY" what took you so long? Oh, there was a pigeons nest in the unit we were hooking to so we made a new nest and moved the babies over to it. The crane operator truck drivers and I are laughing and shaking our heads. I say to him I'm paying those guys to work but how can you not love what they did.
Anyway, That is the only time I have ever seen little baby pigeons to this day. ( a little bigger then a quarter) And the guys did a good job on the nest.

I remember working on a dam and pouring about 90 yard in 32 foo deep pour, top was only about 6x8 ft big. As the crane swung away on last bucket a tree swallow fell at our feet, he hit the crane line. My forman put him on his shoulder as we finished the top. In about 5 minutes he flew off.

As an "outdoorsman" since childhood I've had many opportunities to witness interactions between mankind and nature. Each occasion was a learning experience providing the participants were aware and had an understanding of this dynamic. If we are open to such experience's life is a true blessing/gift and a day without such an experience is a wasted day!!! Sometimes one may not recognize "in the moment" and at some time in the future will have an "aha!!" moment that arouses a "so that is the lesson" understanding!
May we each be more aware of such experiences and the joy they can bring!!

Early this Spring, at the Castle, KT came across a house wren's nest, while out on the Royal Back Porch. The birds had found a nesting spot in a hole on the Royal wood splitter! KT patiently waited and watched while the nest was built. Next to the wood splitter, KT has a painting station. And everytime His Majesty went out to rattle can something, the male bird would sit in a nearby fig tree and raise cane with Him. Well, one day KT looked in and there were 3 eggs. Then a couple of days later, KT looked in and 2 eyes were staring at His Majesty....Mama was sitting on the nest. The male was still raising cane so KT moved on. Yesterday, KT checked....no birds around, nest empty so His Majesty removed it and blocked the hole. Some time this summer KT will need to split some firewood! HA HA

I park my Kubota under an overhang, and I came out the other day to do some yard work only to find my seat was full of blades of r=dry grass, twigs, and god knows what. A robin has made a nest above where I park. All I did was park backwards and the trash and bird poop hit the front end loader. I can wash my tractor, but I will not disturb a nest.
