I found this button many months ago but After talking with some friends about this button. I decided to do some more research on how it got here on the Mason Dixon? The only thing I find is the 24th was stationed in Canada and fought at sera toga. Does anyone know how a 24th regiment soldier would be this far south?

Could be any reason. We found stuff that moved some distance in our colonial/early 1800s sites. I always figured personal keepsake, war trophy, or just simply using something so they didn't have to buy another. Great button though!

I KNOW THEIR LAST BATTLE WAS THE BATTLE OF BENNINGTON VT. AT ONE TIME THEY NUMBERED AROUND 7000. THE POWS AFTER BENNNINGTON WERE HELD IN RUTLAND MASS. I DUG THIS POUCH PLATE IN FEBRUARY OF 2018 IN CENTRAL MASS. ONE OF FOUR KNOWN TO EXIST... PROBABLY MY RAREST FIND

I think buttons especially get moved around. It seemed common for people to have a jar full of buttons they kept to replace lost ones. As an example, I found a 1750 British Naval Commanders uniform button at a Union Civil War Calvary Camp site.

I once found a flat button spill, dozens of them. My guess is they were in a jar at one point, but all the comments above are accurate. They were VERY frugal back then, if a button could be saved and repurposed, it was. EXCELLENT find!
