Sorry, no juicy in-situ pictures of finds here. Just a summary picture for the finds of the day.
My partner and I spent the day hunting curb strips and 7 permissions. The first 30 feet of the first curb strip produced 5 fairly deep clad quarters, which I took as a good sign that maybe the area hadn’t been hunted. Sadly, the silver just didn’t appear, although I did find a few wheats in the curb strips.
In the end, we got permission on 7 properties. I have to say this was one of the most satisfying days of detecting in years. We didn’t get a single “no” on the properties that we asked where someone was home. The homeowners were wonderful. They were sincerely interested in our hobby and asked many questions. They were excited to tell us about the history of their homes and of the neighborhood. Even the daily walkers and wanderers were friendly and encouraging. In the end we bounced back and forth working our way up the street, ultimately only going about half the way down the block.
I was able to recover a variety of items in the first few permissions, including a 1902 Indian, a totally toasted Buffalo nickel, a 5 cent trade token dating to about 1910 and a Chinese cash coin. In the 6th permission I got a nice 90 signal on the Manticore, removed the plug and at the bottom was that unmistakable silver rim. At first glance, there appeared to be some corrosion or pitting showing through, however, after cleaning at home the ring shined up perfectly and had a clear sterling hallmark. The ring is so big that it goes over my thumb, but is thin so not much weight to it.
At the final permission, I was working slowly along the sidewalk when I got a quiet 88-89 tone and removed the plug. I had to tear the plug into multiple pieces to finally recover a small badly tarnished and discolored ring. At first it looked like junk, but with some judicious rubbing the gleam of silver began to appear. A second silver ring (92.5 hallmark). Very small ring, but still a ring.
With these two silver rings I have finally surpassed the total number of silver finds I recovered last year. In 2023 I had 73 silver recoveries. I now have 75 silver recoveries for this year. And, there are still 3 months left to pad my number even further. I wish all of you great success in your hunts. Thanks for looking and HH!
