Ok -- I have a Local School Built in about 1910 - 1916 -- the farthest record back states 1916 - but this record covers many many additions to the building etc..

and if memory serves correctly the cornerstone is dated 1917 - I have to check again

However its been closed as a public school and the building is now owned by private owners

-- So a Few Questions being I am new to metal Detecting and was given a Metal Detector that seems to work quite well in simple tests

1. Would I still need permission to detect this area (and the LARGE LARGE Playground) since its no longer publicly owned?

We also know the VERY Large play area has never been detected - after the school was bought and closed as a School it stored Live Stock / Cows in the field along with all original playground equipment which is STILL there

Cows were moved out though

it belongs to some church organization that supplies things to their missionaries or some such -- I do know this the have packed literally every inch of the building with every peice of junk known to man - furniture to ink pens and pencils - to wallets and purses to computers and laptops LMAO

But back to Topic -- the playground area hasnt been changed in atleast 10 + Years -- so I know where to look and where people tended to group and which area's sports were played in etc.. Kickball mainly

so I guess some other questions are

Where should I look and is this going to be worthy of looking in?
This school served as a HighSchool during its time as well as an Elementary School --- So this brings another question am I likely to discover Very old High School rings? - I mean how far back does the tradition of a Class Ring Go?

any help and advice is appreciated

Thanks

Hi Sangrel, welcome to the forum.

Would I still need permission to detect this area

Yes, you need permission. Do you know them well? I feel they'll probably say, "sure, go ahead." It may be better to ask them about the playing fields first so you can get some practice in - in a not so trashy area, go for the class rings, then work your way in to the playground area.

Tell them you'll pick up the trash and clean up any you find.

Don't leave any holes... make it look better than when you get there.

I'm sure some of our members are going to be happy to throw some tips your way.

Welcome to the forum!

Before you set foot on that property, you need to get permission from the current owner. If it was still a public school, you wouldn't need to.

I'd expect to find things every time you swing the coil. Some stuff will be good, some will be trash. You've got years of hunting in that one location. Take your time. But get permission first - otherwise you'll be tresspassing.

I am fairly sure they will be ok with me detecting the fields - I have talked to them before and they seem to be very down to earth people --

I will most definetly be cleaning the field behind myself -- I am just hoping to find some good valuables and Clad

These fields never had any Vending Machines nearby nor did many students or faculty have the ability to drink softdrinks on the fields -- so I dont look forward to finding many Tabs from Cans -- I should end up with mainly Old Coins and Rings/Jewelry -- But seeing as how this was a Highschool , Middle, & Elm school at diff times - Im sure all sorts of trinkets are around it

I will definetly take any hints and tips - especially on methods to ensure I can get a Yes when I ask them

Thanks

Welcome to the Forum!!! I will be watching to see if you get permission to hunt that spot, should be really good!!

Welcome to the forum... the above advice is solid... permission first.. hunt the fields... If any of the 'owners' are around, show them the trash you cleared before leaving. Promote good will... and you will have a good site for a long time. RickO

I pretty much planned on doing all the advice given to me from the start its just nice to verify it with a few people -- Ive never actually taken the Detector out and used it yet so this will end in 1 of 2 ways - A. Just a Phase that passes or B. Get Addicted to it and do nothing but MD

--- Thanks

If you're real new to this, you might have an easier time starting with a tot-lot with wood-chips or sand. You can get a feeling for what coins sound like, you might find a piece of jewerly. This old school will be filled with all kinds of stuff, probably lots of trash that could bum you out. Be sure to read your manual before and after each hunt. Headphones will help you hear the targets better and also extend your battery life. Headphones with volume controls are best (without the controls, the sounds will blow your head off). Might be better to work-up to that old school.

hrm

Yea there is a Public Ball Field and Soccer Field etc.. right across from the school that I Might search first being public and such & im pretty sure its never been searched either

I also bet that in the ball diamond I might find some rings and jewlery

Next day I get some time it may be a Start of a hobby that gets addicting lol

Thanks
