It is a time capsule. You found it at a school. The last guy that found one on the forum had to repackage his in PVC and rebury it. Open it and take the valuables and rebury it!

I found a brass box that rattled and when I opened it, there was a 1943 half dollar inside in great condition. Open it!!!

Gosh I hope yours isn't something you have to re-burry... Next one I find in plastic is going right back in the ground. Lol
Yours looks really old, maybe it's civil / revolutionary war plans or maps... Careful about shaking it...

My thoughts
It may be a time capsule, many were buried in the not too distant past...some in 1976 to celebrate the bicentennial of the USA..I signed a copy of the Constitution at the bank...they had it there 30 days and said it would go into a time capsule to be buried and not reopened until 2076... If any one is around then to remember about it!
And a number were done in 2000....to be opened in 2100. Since you found it at a school, if the school is still active, you should descreetly inquire if anyone there, like principal or older teachers know about a student project involving a time capsule. If they do and can tell you generally where it was buried and if that comes close to where you dug it...I would go in the dark of night and rebury it unopened.
If they don't, then you should open it and see what it contains. Typical time capsules are made to be air and water tight..if this one is not, then any paper or ephemera in it would be dirt due to water and soil leakage. If it is water tight then everything should still be intact, and it would be very interesting to learn when it was buried etc. Probably would have some names of the kids involved so you could determine, if it did not say, when those kids were in school there.
No one will ever know what it has in it until it is opened, unless the original kids involved still live in that community. They might remember!
