I ask myself that question lately. I spend probably 90% of my time forum time on this forum and 10% divided by the other Metal detecting forums.

First and foremost it is because of other good forum members. 3 of my top five "go to" forum members I convers with via private message questions about detecting are active on this forum. Secondly this is a Friendly forum for the most part. When some posts start to get unfriendly the forum admins are pretty quick to straighten things out and even banning some trolls who just try to stir things up among forum members.

Thirdly we get a lot of questions from experienced members and total novices. Reading these post is part of my learning experience and it seems I am forever learning. Some of these advanced SMF metal detector updates from the manufacturer tend to keep us learning if we choose to download and install the update. Imagine having a new car and every 3 months there was an update that required you to re-learn some things about driving your car that you have mastered. Thank goodness cars don't receive updates. Or do they?

Then there are fewer of the tin foil hat theories bandied around on this forum than another forum. And when these tin hat theories do pop up in posts, they are pretty much debunked by members who don't fall for any long range detectors, dowsing rods or distant viewing nonsense.

Lastly our admins and owners of this forum are very passionate about the hobby and it shows.

Well thought out and written good sir. Being a newbie (1.5 years) I've learned, gleaned and put into practice more useful information than any TY video. It's the people here that offer advice without hesitation that make this the best of all of the MD sites. AND our admins.

I gave up on "the other forum" long ago, it is so overly moderated its pathetic.
I see the need for moderation of course, someone gets out of line there has to be someone to maintain decorum, but these guys are [were] puffed up egomaniacs on a power trip.
I joined a paid part of the forum for off topic stuff, including politics., which of course is banned from the general public forums. I like to argue, and this seemed a good place to do it. Their rules were basically, there are none. Don't say anything illegal, forum was unmoderated, mods are just like any other guy there ect.

Another of the very few rules was keep it there, don't let the heated conflicts spill over to the public forums. Well I had guys following me to the public forums, I'd post a MD find and they'd start in with their bickering from the politics forum, I complained about it to one of the mods who I know didn't like me and didn't agree with my views, and he gave ME a 1 month ban !

So on comes the covid nightmare are there were lots of debates there every bit as contentious as politics, 1 mod there just bleated out everything the government said and thought everyone should be forced to be vaccinated, I disagreed and was banned again, thereupon I called it quits for good there.

I know for a fact that quite a few of the guys finding sensational stuff were frauds, I even proved it once by finding the exact same pic that a guy posted that claimed he found it at a coin website - And you guessed it, I was banned again because another one of their rules is you can't dispute any find claims, bad for business.

So this place is pretty chill, I'm a man and if I say or do something stupid and I deserve disipline, I can't take it, I expect it in fact ,, But that dump I was being harrased because I wasn't part of the back scratching choir all singing the same tune, screw them.

Xxray Just admit it you are a trouble maker LOL, all kidding aside i am here not only to learn from every one I enjoy the post no matter how ludicrous some of the Post are

I no longer go to other forums. This one is just right for me. I enjoy the posts here, and there is a wealth of good knowledge to be gleaned as well. I have been on some that their opinions outweigh their common sense. Easy to get good solid answers here.

I like this forum a lot. I don't post as often as I did when I in the last year or so, but I am on this site virtually every day, so I can read what's new with respect to hunting finds, detector questions, or other general detecting info. I've asked for, and received, numerous help replies when I have questions about things. And there is a lot of activity on this site, meaning it is an excellent go-to source for people who enjoy detecting, so it's always fresh material every day.

Love this forum. I like most of the active people here, I like how the staff runs the site, I like the forum software, I like the choice of forum topics, I like how they're organized, and I like the activity level.

I think I'm a member at pretty much all of the other detecting forums, but the only other one that I visit regularly is Detector Prospector. Good group over there too, with lots of tech oriented convo.

Well I'm getting to be an oldkoot too, I like to argue and I also like to not argue. Forum name is pretty self explanatory so I respect that, as long as I'm treated like an adult I have no problem being friendly.
People just need to conduct themselves the way they would face to face, most problems go away before they start.

FMDF is my go to forum for the high amount of variety and activity.

Detector Prospector is another forum I belong to. It doesn't have as much activity as FMDF, but when I want to get into the more technical aspects of the hobby, it's my go to site.

For the ultimate in technical aspects? That would be the Geotech forum. It's more like a metal detector engineer forum. They often "get into it" so deep over there, that it's enough to make one's head spin :)

Some good technical topics discussed clearly over on Detector Prospector.

Searching around for answers as a newbie landed me here. I tried perusing other forums. One forum had little to no activity that should have been much more active. I think the software was buggy and sluggish.

Here, it's friendly, people want to genuinely help with advice and helpful criticism. Yes, sometimes feathers get ruffled but that's part of learning through a dichotomy of oppinions, experience and facts/fiction. After all the dust settles, people are still friendly and buds. Glad to be here myself and call it home.

Being myself tends to get me into trouble LOL. I'm just the type of person who wants to know the truth so in case I get asked by others I know the answer. I'm no rocket scientist, but I'm no fool. If I get an answer that sets the alarm off in my head I tend to press for the reasoning to an answer I feel is incorrect. If I'm given the proof, I'm a happy camper. Otherwise, I tend to keep posing the question in different forms until one of us sees the light. Or gives up LOL.

Some people just can not accept they made a mistake. I think some of it is because they feel they have a reputation to uphold, so they feel they have to be right, even when given evidence of being wrong. Those are the ones I love to press LOL. Watch them squirm.

You may also notice I have a habit of adding new paragraphs to my post. I can never get all I have in my head out the first time it seems.

What about the Dankowski forum? Anyone an active member there?

I checked it out about a year ago, and wow, what a laughably terrible layout. Although he did get new forum software a few months ago.

I never visited that one for the same reason. Didn’t know he upgraded the forum software though. I’ll have to check it out.

well I have tried to sign up on that site several times but every time I think I have become a member on dankowski's forum it will not allow me to sign in even after I have done the verification, it keeps telling me I have entere the wrong user name and password, so I have given up on that site altogether

Dankowski is Ok, got some old school heavy hitters there and occasionally some exclusives but yes the layout is a joke, looks like something from 1995.
