Where to part with your gold...

Is there anywhere that takes plated gold and silver? I figure not, since the recovery costs are so high, but just thought I'd ask.

I took some to a local guy but he told me they would process it with less than 5 pounds  guess I'll try and sell it at garage sale or something ;)

If you are talking about gold filled and not electroplated then Northern Refineries shows 90% spot. Not sure about a minimum. Only problem is gold filled contains hardly any gold. Most big rings would pay a buck if that. Nobody accepts electroplated gold.

Midwest, how can you beat 95% of market value for gold and 90% for Plat and Silver, you cant anywhere?

I found a 11grm plat ring and made some local calls and was offered $160 top end for it. Midwest paid almost $350:shock:

Jamie

this isn't entirely true.. many (honest) coin shops will pay spot for silver and close to spot for gold. id say the 95% for gold is generally good but 90% for silver is a little under what many places will pay. for example a silver dollar has about 24g of pure silver and if spot is 31 (as it is today 11/7/12, convieniently 1$/g of pure Ag) then the refiner will only give you 21.6 (24g-2.4g=21.6 or 21.6$). Most coin places will give you about a dollar under spot which would be $23. calling around im not surprised at the variety of offers, if you find an honest dealer stick with them. helps to go in and talk to the guys directly, they generally don't care to give phone appraisals as its kind of a waste of their time and will lowball for that reason. if the item comes in and sells at the lowball price, win for them. i would encourage anyone/everyone whos thinking of selling precious metals to do the basic math on how to calculate melt value.

(items weight x purity)/31.1g = oz troy

oz troy x spot price = melt value.

I have a bunch of silver I would like to send in to get back as a 1oz bar. Is this something they do? If so what is the charge?

I have a bunch of gold 85 grams and about 7 OZ. of silver I'm fixing to ship out. I have never sold any before so I thought I would contact mid west and ARA and feel them out. Does anyone know if I need to remove the stones? Some are diamonds and other Birth stones stones. I would rather not have to remove them if I don't need to.

I was looking at the midwest refineries website and saw this: Midwest Refineries pays 80% of the amount of pure silver contained in 800 silver. What is 800 silver??

I prefer to find a nice old caldron and then put all my gold in that and find the first rainbow then bury it at the end of it so I know where it is.

Just so people wont recognize me I wear a green pixie hat and a full red beard (im smart like that) and put on an accent too...they cant fool me

I don't know if these companies will deal with private sellers any more but if you find a place they tend not to pay for stones (its a freebee for them) so id pry out the stones and put them into baggies for each stone, they could add up...I know when I but gold rings and jewelry I try to find then without stones...its so much easier that way

I just sent a package of silver and gold into Midwest Refineries last wenesday and I recieved my check on monday. Great people to deal with I couldn't be happier.:D

I just sent some gold off the Midwest Refineries and was very happy. Once they got my package three days later I had my check. Using an online calculator my gold came to $1,080 and my check was for $935.

I am new to the forum... But i have traded with Midwest and ARA.... Both are good but Midwest is the best...

Why is Midwest best? Please elaborate. Many of us are interested. If I remember correctly only Midwest takes silver. I have collected several pieces of silver jewelry, but haven't sent in thinking it was too small for them to bother with.

I actually just called all of my local gold buying places and found a place that offered me 95% of value for scrap. 20 minutes away from my house, well worth it instead of having to mail it.
Best thing to do, is just call local places.

I have a good history with Gary out at midwest mostly on scrap..they buy silver and gold scrap seem to be very honest and fast.. ARA is good also but i did not like that they split my gold and silver checks..gold first then like a week later my silver check showed up....You will be fine with either but i prefer Midwest..Good luck to you...

P.S.
Small amounts they buy straight out...So no amount to small

I called ARA yesterday and was told they dont take gold from the general public.....hmmmmm

Ill call midwest...

Some sell those in large clumps on the bay..you don't get much but do a search for 'gold plate scrap' but I see like 300g going for like $40-$50, so that's like 5 ounces...so I wouldn't think about a retirement fund quite yet on them....probably better to go look at videos of how to reclaim them yourself...make your own gold drops

Story on ARA. Direct from one of the owners to me. IF you call them you will get a CANNED answer. They have to do that. If you just send it in they will process it with NO problem and send you a check.

Insure it and use this form:

If you need more room write on the back. If you want an advance payment of 90% and the rest when they finish the process send them a letter with it. Include your phone. You will NOT have any problems. I was assured that if there was a change they would contact me.

Any questions I wll be free to answer them.
