Waders... What do you use in the Fall/Winter

I'm looking at getting some waders so I can actually get in the water or wet sand and not have to worry about a wider flooding the boots I use right now. The boots I have are water proof but they are not tall at all so any rush of water will come over the top and thus end my hunting day. I would like a nice pair of Simms or LL Bean but they are just out of my price range now that I lost my full time job and had to get a part time job. I did see a pair of Colombia waders on amazon for 99.99 that were 1000 g thinsulate. What do you guys use during this time of year? I'm on the jersey shore so it can get cold but I won't be hunting in the water all the time so they don't have to be good for -20*. Any direction would be greatly appreciated.

Check with Craig, he has some of those Lifetimers..

One thing for sure you don't want thinsulated special if it is 1000, means the boots are going to be like Frankensteins and heavy. I would go light weight material, larger size and dress under as needed with boot foot thin as possible. I wore waders most of the summer in OC MD, even in the heat, they were the light weights and I could drop them to my waist when using the belt/pouch. Boot foot waders keep the sand out...

mine are the cheapos.. hodgemans I think.

I use the Field and Stream breathables, (from dicks). They cost about $109.00. I have used them about 25-30 times since I got them in the spring and they are holding up well. I've gone through 2 pairs of neoprenes from Cabelas, and would never buy another pair. (And they were more than twice the money) Like OBN said, just layer accordingly underneath, and you'll be fine......

To keep you the warmest in the cold water buy neoprene... most of us have summer waders (breathable) and winter waders (neoprene) try to find them without a steel shank or extend your detectors shaft so you don't get falsing.

That is what I have found I have my Excalibur on a straight shaft so it is a little bit further then the a shaft. For summer I just use a bathing suit and water shoes with higher ankles

We can't do that up here unless we want to be attacked by snail maggots

the pair I use are so cheap and thin. $15(Asia) but I'm in my 2nd season with them. I just wear a few pairs of pants and socks and make sure I don't stand around sweating in the sun...

THis^

Same here, I have been using the same pair of Red Ball canvas waders for 15-20 years now... Non insulated, boot foot... Dress warm under them!

<*)))>{

I like neoprene boot foot waders but none of the ones I have tried in the last 3 years have held up. Pretty freaking sad. Here they are.

Pro Line: Bulky, no inside pocket, uncomfortable boot. On my second pair first one leaked and was repaired all through it's second season and then given up on. Available locally and I needed waders so now I'm waiting for pair #2 to start leaking.

Blue Hogeman from K Mart: Lighter neoprene, inside pocket, short comfortable boot. Third time I used the the boot leaked. It was a flaw in the boot mold, air bubble that popped or something. Repaired with aqua seal and they are still on the job. I sewed on a new strap where the one started ripping out but so far the best of the lot.

Frog Toggs: Wonderful high back and front design, comfortable boot, no inside pocket, nice wide velcro straps. Absolute garbage right out of the box, leak in every seam. After 1 season they are 30% aqua seal and they still leak. These things make me very angry.

I will try breathable boot foot waders next but I cringe at the thought of spending twice as much as neoprene and getting more chinese made garbage.

I use these. Can put on extra protection under it. Plus extra socks. Got shoes two sizes too big. Perfect!

Does the water get really cold in the winter down in Florida?

I'm on the Northeast coast. Gets cold enough to kill you. Had to fish a guy out of the river once who jumped in for his beer cooler. In 15 minutes he was fixing to go in a coma before the ambulance arrived. It just takes us a little longer to die from hypothermia than it does up north:lol:

The coolest water of the year for Florida occurs at the state's northeast corner in January and February. Then the ocean at Fernandina Beach is usually around 55 °F (13 °C).

I must agree with Irons. The Neoprene just doesn't hold up. I think it has to do with the way that the Neoprene part is attached to the waterproof lining? Tried shoe goo for repairs, but doesn't work because you can't get the stuff through to where the liner is.

Mine lasted over 6 years.. bought them at Dicks Sporting goods and paid less then a hundred for them at the time... after each use I washed the salt off of them... I guess its the luck of the draw :D

so would a polyester material last longer here is what it says for the ones I'm looking at for the features:

Attractive Taupe Color
Heavy-Duty Polyester Material
CaddisDry Breathable Technology
Handy Mesh Front Pocket for Storage
Seams Taped, Glued and Stitched
Free Wader Belt and Repair Kit
Knobby Bootfoot Design

I can't find anything about them having a steel shank in the boot. Is it the boot foot waders that have the problem. Should I get stocking foot and get boots for them. I didn't want to go that route because I didn't want sand to get in the boots all the time.

I like hunting in waders I'm just not happy with the quality I have been getting.
The frog toggs were a real disappointment because the comfort and design is top notch IMO.

I see lost of guys like the stocking foot waders with booties but to me that's just one more thing to buy. Get it all in one package. I also deal with seriously cold water and like heavy wool socks.

I will probably try a set of expensive name brand waders next spring and get the best warranty available and just keep sending them back for new ones.

I can play the junk product game too.
