Hello everyone, I’m new to this hobby, so new that I just got my first detector today (Garrett AT Max). I live in Illinois (Will County). I pulled the trigger on this purchase before realizing how restricted Illinois is. I’m hoping to get ideas on where to detect and how to obtain permission from private property owners. I travel a lot for work (locomotive engineer) so I don’t have too much time but I’m looking forward to decompress with this hobby.

Hi Rainmaker,

so cool you are locomotive engineer. I assume you actually drive the train? Or do you design the engines?

Do you travel out of state? if so do your research at other states you visit if you have time to detect. take your detector with you.

Welcome to this forum. bunch of good people here who can answer all your questions about metal detecting. I have been metal detecting for many years and learn something new each week from these guys.

Welcome to the forum,
from the Ozarks, in Arkansas.

Well you are not far from Riverside / North Riverside,
and they are both great old towns to detect, Riverside especially, as it has many islands of grass in-between all those winding roads.
Years back, it was always common to spot detectorists, never a word said. I speak from years back .. Perhaps someone from that area can chime in.
The train stops in the middle of town.
