The D2 she leaks!

Folks, disaster has struck. I went for a water hunt this weekend and after a few hours I noticed a little condensation in the bottom right corner of the screen, which slowly turned into drops and then a flood. The funny thing was the screen went blank but the detector kept functioning. I turned it off and finished the hunt. There's no sign of any water out the headphone port, so I assume a seal some where else has failed.
This marks 2 years from purchase, I wonder if we're about to see a run of D2's with flooding issues and a common fault, or if I'm just super unlucky. I use my D2 underwater a lot so I'm probably pushing it harder than most.

The good news is this brought the excal out of retirement, only 1 ear piece is working and it feels like I'm swinging a tank compared to the D2, but it snagged me a 1.4g 18k ring this morning. Might be time to think about upgrading the headphone situation, does anyone make a thick heavy set that can block sound underwater?

I've sent the control pod off to the dealer, I'll be sure to let everyone know how the returns process goes.

Below is the bits of gold - the heavily encrusted stuff in my hand is the gold chain - it turned out to be hollow link 9k. Most would have tossed it as rubbish, but I like to break up crusty stuff to see what's in it and I saw gold. The D2 sniffed it out along with the yellow gold ring back.
The Excal got the white gold.

Sorry to hear about your detector. Good thing you had a back-up to keep you from freaking out about not being able to hunt!

I didn't know gold (even 9k) would encrust and deteriorate as bad as that looks. My 10k finds all come out looking shiny. I guess I'm finding nothing but fresh drops, even though some are quite deep. Never have had to clean up any gold.

Sorry to hear about the Deus ll. Hard to really get an idea of how many have had problems. If you are on any of the Facebook pages you will know, if you post something negative on them you will either get kicked off the page, have a bunch of people who don't water detect call you names, have someone wanting your address so they can come beat your arse, etc. If mine leaked I would never myself talk about it on FB. Had someone pm me years ago talking about my mother. I have had a couple different detectors screen go out and still work. Happened to my CTX when a seam at the bottom let loose. Bottom of the screen started to fade before the screen went.

Already saw a Manticore in person where someone didn't remove their headphone plug regular to clean it with electronics cleaner. Inside was getting rotten as heck already.

Facebook and social media are killing society as we know it.

It certainly can. I've found 18k gold that's turned completely red/brown, and with iron stuck to it. It happens when the item is stuck next to another more reactive metal and/or it doesn't move for many many years in the salt water.

They sound like a bunch of snowflakes. The D2 has heaps of problems like any detector. The water antenna isnt water proof, the bh01's are uncomfortable and break easily, the stock shaft is rubbish, the screen is too small compared to it's competitors (or too large if you hate screens)
I don't really care as long as XP replace it without a fuss. These things aren't going to last forever, It's already paid for itself, if I get 5 years out of it as per the warranty it's all I ask for.

Hope you don't get a letter stating user abuse... good job on your gold its and the ring..

"Dear sir, we regret to inform you that use of our detector's dive program wasn't meant to be used when diving..."
I doubt it. The control box looks in perfect condition, I reckon the external speaker leaked.

D2 , Sorry to here that it leaked , glad all know- that any screen machine leaks under water , guess that is why the water machines are mostly No Screen machines , give credit to Deus , 2 years - a diver , that is good , maybe manufacturers will look at incasing those screen machines with an outer waterproof casing , including inter , that way if the outer casing ever leaks , one can tell a head of time , this might bring up the price of water machine a couple hundred , but save manufacturers on repairs of warranty work , those Excals can leak to without a screen , if you don't replace the seals , OBN can probably chime in on that , anytime I get mine worked on , get new seals , happy hunting , Earl

One plus about the Legend I haven't seen any water issues posted online or in groups. My Legend lived in the water all year in 23 no problems. I am fresh water though not salt so that may be it.

Thinking about cashing some gold in and try the legend in spring. Santa didn't bring me one. Little less room for error in salt water. You need to be a clean freak. My water bill is high rinsing off detectors at the house after they already got rinsed off at the beach.

Good lord , how much water do you use ? Take them in the shower with you like others do here.🤣

Sorry to hear about the D2 LJS, you got your moneys worth out of it though for sure. Definitely interested in hearing how the replacement is handled, and how they determine what is user error or a manufacturers defect. Alot of grey area in these warranties. Judging by what I've heard about XP, my guess is, they will just replace it with a new remote. This might be the first case I've seen, maybe second, of D2 water intrusion. That's really good, but more than I've seen from the other new releases like the new nox models, manticore, and legend. Been a minelab fan for years, but I like what I'm seeing from the D2 and Legend. I'll probably look at another machine in a year or two, hopefully there will be even more options then. Hoping for a quick turnaround on your D2, and good luck in 2024!

That's unfortunate about the leak. I'd like to do more marine metal detecting but I'm sort of paralyzed between leaking devices and outdated, but effective, technology. Near as I can tell the folks using the Legend seem to be doing well. I wonder how well it does compared to Excalibur II within its admittedly shallower immersion range compared to the latter device?
I notice a significant amount of green corrosion gunk on your gold find. Could it be that your find has been alloyed with copper (rose gold) to some extent to achieve that sandy(?) verdigris?

Excalibur 2's leaked plenty of times as well, they aren't immune by any means. The reality is salt water hunting technology has had all the major gains in terms of effectiveness 30 years ago, new machines are just fluffing around the edges offering very slight benefits.

Gold standards in most countries were 9k and 18k, so 9k gold is alloyed with mostly other metals and the gold can't completely protect it, so in time the reaction with salt water and minerals in the sand causes the crust you see. I've found a 22k ring from around 1900, and it had zero tarnish on it because the gold content is so high

Problem is when an excal ll's coil wire splits. Easier to buy a new coil for a Legend in that case. I have a couple blue excals with stock coils and an excal ll. Guess which ones coil wire just split. It wasn't a blue one.
