Sorry Brad, Green Mountain MD

The difference is that I use an ad blocker to block any ads YouTube feels the need to bombard me with every time I watch a video. I can't block out an infomercial that's in the middle of a video.

Sorry, but I don't think I should have to sit through an infomercial to watch someone's metal detecting video. Most guys who post metal detecting videos do it for fun and are glad that someone actually watches their videos. Thinking that someone should put up with ads because their videos are so wonderful is arrogant and offensive to me. I like Brad's videos, but I can take them or leave them any time I want. When they turn into ways for him to make a buck and waste two minutes of my time every week, then I no longer need to watch them.

what is arrogant and offensive is thinking you deserve that video for free and that the creator is not entitled to profit from hard work in the way they see fit.....the irony in what you said blows my mind. People used to pay for cable that had commercials.....

Sorry, I'm not sitting through an infomercial to watch some silly metal detecting video. The "creator" always did them for fun until some sleazy ad ex thought he could make a buck off the guy. Brad should have told him to take a hike. Ethics should never go out the window for a few bucks...

Yeah, I think a lot of people don't realize how much work goes into making videos as nice as the ones Brad uploads. He actually goes above and beyond what most channels do and puts a LOT of work into editing, camera angles/scenes, etc. That stuff takes time and skill.

You assume all creators create with only the intention of fun? People build their livelihood off of being creators. Just because they created for some time without pay does not mean their end goal was not to support themselves by creating. That right there shows your disconnect with online business now. Just because someone enjoys what they do does not mean they should do it for free. Especially when they provide a service to others(entertainment and education in this case). That is like saying because I enjoy my job in a glass shop, I shouldn't be paid. If they can't afford to keep making videos then they won't and you will have nothing to watch. There is no ethics that say advertising a product is inherently evil, especially if you approve of and support the company and their products. You seem to feel entitled to these peoples time and effort and money spent for some reason. So if understand you correctly; if they won't give it to you for free with no interruption exactly how YOU want.. then you won't watch because they are not remaining true to themselves and the hobby?

Most have no idea what it takes to produce videos like that just in your time, not to mention the multitude of other costs. He could dig 10 times the stuff instead of filming, editing, researching and compiling the history to be presented and so on.

I've watched every video Brad has put on YouTube, from day one. He did not originally do it to make a buck. He did it for his love of metal detecting and wanted to show others what he enjoyed doing in his spare time. We'll have to agree to disagree on this one.

In my op a lot of comments seem to think I begruge the guy makin a buck. THIS IS NOT THE CASE. Although irritating I understand the commercials thing and most times sit through them. My !!!!! was the fact that he slid a commercial in his video. IMO thats underhanded and getting greedy. And that is what drove the OP. Mark

If you think about it, YouTube content creators are not much different than those who create websites/forums. Building a successful hobby based site like this one for example, takes time, skill and money. Usually the creator starts up the website because he or she sincerely enjoys the topic. As the website gains momentum we start to invest more and more time & money into it. Eventually we put up advertising banners for sponsors or Adsense to compensate for what we put into it, regardless if it's time, money or both. Most of us see nothing wrong with that. If we only visited websites with no ads, we'd probably have to cut out 99% of our favorite sites. Anyway, same logic should apply for YouTube creators IMHO.

I relate to some of the sentiments here that making these videos isn't easy. It takes an amount of time and skill to come up with amazing and film-worthy videos for the audience to enjoy. People complaining about ads or sponsorships don't realize that these creators take time out of their normal lives to entertain. That takes time and money.

It feels like people nowadays just want to take and take without giving something back. They don't earn a lot from YT videos and if a sponsor will be able to provide them with financial backing to continue creating amazing videos for all of us to enjoy then so be it. It's not like these creators are forcing you to buy these brands. They're just providing a different perspective.

Here's the logic:
Amazing videos need time, skill and MONEY. Money do not grow on trees. Sponsors can provide money to continue creating amazing videos. If money runs out, amazing videos run out. It's not that the creator doesn't love the hobby. Quite the opposite. The creator loves the hobby hence he is willing to do whatever to accept financial help from sponsors to keep doing what he loves. It's as simple as that.

Brad has been selling a lot of his handmade stuff through his website and that's fine. He's never obnoxious about it and his items are well made and interesting to check out. Backpacks, leather sheaths for diggers and so on. But stopping the video in the middle so he can plug some company is lame, period. Stick to your handmade stuff, Brad, and tell the ad execs to take a hike.

Still doesn't make sense no matter how you try to frame it. A company offered to sponsor him, he said yes and did it and most likely had to follow their terms to some extent. You guys are upset he didn't do it how YOU wanted framed in what YOU PERCEIVE to be some sort of moral standard....You must be able to read minds saying that greed is driving him. Would hate to be a neighbor of any of you with that kind of judgement on people you don't even know. I would also like you all to stop using the internet of the companies that advertise through slipping in ads on cable, radio, and those little annoying signs everywhere. Or substitute any other product or service out there that might interrupt you during any show, walk down the road, and so on. The real root of the problem is you guys are upset that something FREE to you inconvenienced you to have to press the fast forward button.....

No Popup Forum Ads

This brings up another thing that is fantastic about this friendly forum.
There are no popup ads.
Many forums have so many giant popup ads that it is difficult to read text.
I do not know who owns this forum but they should be commended.

Isn't there an option on YouTube where you can buy a premium package for a small monthly fee where you can watch ad free ?

You need to either:

Stop watching his videos.

Or

Stop complaining with how he chooses to monetize them.

they are worried about an ad in the video itself that the creator puts in, not the ads youtube provides in the beginning or middle of videos.

Ohhhhh....ok. Thanks ! If someone wants to pimp a product once or twice , short and sweet , I don't have a problem with that. No big deal. But I have seen a few where it seems they go on for 1.5 minutes 2 or 3 times and are tasteless. It kills the video for me. I don't complain. I just don't watch them anymore. Way too many out there that don't , so I just move on.

There is nothing you can do about the YouTube commercials unless you pay for ad-free. But you would still be getting hit with the infomercial in the video.

Me and you are definitely on different sides of the coin on this one. You were right though, you can't turn on any device, heck you can't even open a mag or a piece of mail with out some sort of solicitation. So yeah it is all about marketing and ads and trying to suck every last nickel out of you. There should be a limit but unfortunately there isn't. With all the comments it seems most are so used to it that they are immune. Profit it one thing, but it seems more like greed to me and I for one am sick of it. I still say the infomercial cheapened the quality of the video and as one guy commented " Just don't watch" and better words never spoken. Time will tell if my old school way of thinking is outdated. it has been that way for awhile, look how they got women to smoke more cigs...or take over the work force in ww2.....this is nothing new, it just finally caught up to the internet. the thing you say about some being immune make sense, we have been assaulted by advertising pretty hard since the late 1800s... people used to get paid to paint ads on the side of their barns for certain tobacco products and all sorts of things.

Here:

I hear the "This video is sponsored by XYZ-",

skip it by double-tapping (10-second skip)

The content creator gets money regardless,

I get video regardless.

Easy peasy.

P.S. This is how I do it, not trying to start another argument.
