Ok so I'm thinking about doing some river/creek detecting but I have no idea where to start, what to look for or what settings I should be using. When researching what shall I be looking for. There's only one known crossing from 1800s but some stories of kids playing in another part. I guess what I'm getting at is do you guys just hop in and go or are there certain areas that yield better results. Do you hit the edges or the middle or what? I'm afraid that I will just dig 8 tons of trash. Will be using my Nox 600. Water is low now and most parts are only about 6". The bottom is a sand/rock mix in central Illinois.

Thanks!

The library or the local old timers would be your best bet to find old swimming holes. Maybe even the local historical society. I've done hours of research online looking for old swim spots, and most were not documented it seems. Good luck and keep us posted please!

Try Park 1 (recommended by Minelab for fresh water) or Field 1 first. If they run stable going in an out of the water you should be good. Ground balance out of the water on a wet bank or sand bar. If you get a little ground noise just reject -9 and -8 and see if that takes care of it.

Have fun!

You will definitely need to be safety conscious. Wear kevlar type gloves.
Be careful when stepping onto slippery rocks. Try to stay on the firmer sand.
Navigating larger rocks that are wet and sandy can be like walking on ice.
Let someone know where you are going and it is even better if you can go with a buddy.
With only 6" of water, you should be in pretty good shape.

i just hop in and go, start swinging. i've seen too many folks "research" their way right outta doing what they wanted in the first place lol. life is short, do the things instead of plan the things. you can research a little along the way to help. :)
