Resurrecting to buy a underwater detector with a good reputation of not leeking.

I snorkel staying out for like four hours at a time. I like river detecting , completely drowning the machine. I have had to send my detector back to be repaired the last two years. It said it was good in water up to ten feet. So I’m thinking I better save to use on land, an get one just for water. I would like to hear from someone that has had good luck with the machine not leeking when used under water. Give me some recommendations. Thanks

Salt water, fresh ?
What machine is this that leaks, probably would not want a recommendation for that one. I personally have had very good luck with my AT Pro.

I just wade, I think I'd use a little handheld like a pulsedive if I snorkeled. Obviously you wouldn't want much of a stem, all modern detectors break down a bit on length but I don't know if that would be enough.

How deep are you diving that you drowned a simplex?

The new xterra pro is rated for 16 feet, about the same price as the simplex

If you don't mind spending money you could get a minelab excalibur 2, its rated for up to 200 feet.

Id go with a Deus 2 , so far I havn't seen leak issue's , and some shallow dive with them , Myers detectors is clearing out Fisher detectors , he has one new CZ 21 for sale , other than that an Excalibur 2 , An ATPRO never liked them , the sounds & screen  So I don't have a D2 , but I have friends with them, they submerge there machines , The D2 with the 9 inch coil , is what I would get , good luck with your choice, happy hunting , Earl

I personally would not dunk a $1K+ machine, as there really is no need to, for obvious reasons and just my opinion. I use the AT exclusively in the water and it is a ring magnet. I really wouldn't care what the screen looks like since its under water and not all that visible. Took almost a decade of being dunked maybe a bit more, paid for itself a dozen times over I really could not ask for more.

That’s what I’ve been thinking.

How so ?
What modern advantage would I have with the max in the water ?
You mean over the AT PRO?

Cons:
Well, if you are in the water, the wireless headphones are a no-go, so that eliminates that.

It is definitely a chattier machine, and if you want to run it at high sensitivity you will have to deal with that. If you lower the sensitivity the chattiness goes away but you loose a lot of the extra depth. This would make the depth only slightly better than the PRO.

It's still a single frequency machine.

Pros:
It is just as Rugged as the PRO.
It has an All-Metal mode, which the PRO doesn't have.
It has a Back-Lit display, which can be really nice in early morning or evening hunts regardless of terrain.
If you are in saltwater, the PRO is notorious for being pretty useless (or so I've heard). The MAX doesn't solve all the problems the PRO had with saltwater, but it is significantly better at managing it. I have hunted saltwater with mine, and it works with some adjusting of settings.
It is more sensitive than the PRO, and a customer review I read before buying the MAX said that, when he tested it, the max did indeed get significantly more detection depth than the PRO on the objects he tested, even up to the advertised 50% in some cases (At the price of being a chattier machine).
Adjustable Audio Volume (One of my favorites honestly). It was quite loud on the default setting. The speakers on the machine itself were overkill and the headphones were deafening, but being able to adjust the audio to a comfortable level was a lifesaver. I don't know what the PRO is set to, but if you find that it is often too loud, that's probably the reason they put that upgrade on the MAX.
Changed from 15 to 13.6 khz, which isn't much, but it is a slight improvement supposedly.
It also has 44 levels of Iron disc. instead of 40. It's only a 10% improvement, but it's there.
It also has a "Automated Ground Balance Window that simultaneously spreads ground balancing to several different settings for several different ground conditions."

This being said, people that are used to the PRO (that I have seen online) generally prefer the PRO to the MAX anyway. Most of them cited the fact that the MAX uses the AT Gold's tones over the PROs, which they don't like.

As far as "Modern" advantages? Not a whole lot honestly. It has its advantages but not nearly as many as some of the newest machines out there. Is it better than the PRO? In my opinion, yes. Is it more modern? Yes, but not by a lot. Is it worth the extra price? For me it was, for the audio, back-lit display, and a couple other things. At the end of the day, it comes down to personal preference my friend.

I typically use it in the water with 1 bar short of full sensitivity with no problems, but this at very clean beaches.
I said "modern advantages" specifically because you said it was outdated. For me, its not outdated finding rings in fresh water, I am doubting if there is anything that could do much better year after year.
Don't think there are any wireless headphones for any machine that work in the water, freqs + H2O simply do not mix well. I got the blue waterproof headphones that were offered with the AT originally and they have worked great, a decade of soaking and still going strong, I am impressed. I use it exclusively in the water, so most of the factors of land detecting are null for me, beach hunting, as you likely are aware, is pretty simple compared to land.

Yes, I don't think there are any wireless options for underwater. That's why I said that the wireless upgrade the MAX has is useless underwater.

I understand more about what you mean now lol. The AT PRO is a very capable machine, and it has proven itself to be one of the most bulletproof machines out there. It will definitely still find rings and most anything else you would need it to. The "Modern Advantages" that the new machines have don't make the PRO obsolete, but it does make it outdated. Multi-frequency machines, as well as machines with better depth and discrimination are the main things that are making the PRO "outdated" as I said, but that is like saying a new sporty car makes a '96 Toyota Tacoma outdated. The Tacoma is bulletproof and will get the job done fine. It may not be as comfortable or as feature-dense as the new innovations, but it will be consistent and reliable in what it can do. You get what I'm sayin? :)
