I was reluctant to do permissions with the dry summer we had, but we've had rain lately and it's getting late in the season so I tried a couple this week. I asked at two places and they were both friendly and interested.

First place was from the 30's and I found 5 wheat pennies (from 36-48) and a 1940 Mercury. The dime was badly tarnished, but since it wasn't rare I did some hard core cleaning to make it look pretty.

Stopped at a nearby farm this am. Not sure how old but it shows on my 1937 map. First 45 minutes turned up 5 toy cars (not sure if they are tootsie yet). Then I got another 30-32 signal and figured another toy. Nope. My first Standing Liberty Quarter! :cool3: Found 3 modern coins after that but had to leave for lunch.

Congrats on you first SLQ, Merc and wheaties. Like you I have held off door knocking for the same reason. But now its time with moist ground and cooler temps. Good luck, Mark

Congrats on joining the elite SLQ club! Shoot me a PM and I'll share the secret knock to get in the clubhouse door:laughing:

Excellent finds ! Congratulations on the SLQ ! Thanks for sharing !
Thanks!

Thanks Mark. I thought it would already be too cold here, but the next couple days are supposed to be near 60 - then rain/snow and cold. So maybe only a few days left. I'm not going out there in the 30's. :D

Nice one there Scott, SLQ’s are a little tricky to find! If you’re successful at knocking doors, good deal! The whole notion isn’t what I personally do but there are certainly many coins to be found with that modus operandi!;)

Congrats on the old silver! Always makes the day. Good luck out there.
Thanks!

Thanks Kevin!
Actually I'm finding it a LOT easier than I thought it would be. People see me doing curb strips or a yard, and they are coming over to talk to me and suggesting I do their yard and tell me the history of their house. Got 2 more permissions this morning doing curb strips.
I've pretty much pounded the parks in my area and find that I'm getting much better results doing yards of old houses. So much history in this area! I'm wishing winter wasn't on the immediate horizon, but I'm really looking forward to spring.

I'm curious about how you cleaned the tarnished merc, and also the following: Did you find it during the day or at night? And was the spot it came out of particularly wet? Lastly, was the dark stuff on it the same color when you first found it, or was it white? Hopefully your answers will confirm a small, unimportant theory I have.
