I recently upgraded my Fisher F2 with a fisher double D coil and went out this weekend to give it a shot. I went to my parent’s home where I grew up, my father grew up on this property also. Based on my grandparents being rural farmers and the fact the land was unlived on before they purchased the land, the likelihood of finding very old coins and objects pre 1900’s vintage is low. I have searched several spots on this property in the past, in old farming fields, an old logging railroad dummy line from the early 20th century, and several random interesting places in the woods. Other than lots, and lots of rail road ties I haven’t found much of interest.

This weekend I wanted to reduce my scope and focus on some spots that would have a high probability of finding some coins. So I focused on the gravel parking area and the location of the clothes line my grandparents used. I found a 1964 quarter, a wheat penny, several modern coins, and a great deal of plumbing parts. My grandfather was a plumber and it seems he dropped a lot. It was a short 3 hour hunt but successful. The double d seemed to cover ground much quicker than the stock round coil.

Based on recommendations from this group, I used a pry bar and a hammer to chisel through the sixty year old gravel parking lot. This method was far better than my previous attempts using a shovel and a pick. Thank you guys for the helpful hints.

I do have a question for you guys. Have any of you had any experience hunting logging dummy lines? Are there any land features that would be hot spots, like near a creek, hill tops, bottomland, etc.? Any other helpful hints would be much appreciated.

Welcome from South Carolina !!!!

Don't know much about dummy lines myself, but you can try doing a web search for related sites for the area you're trying to hunt.

Here is what might be a related page as an example -

https://www.facebook.com/dummyline/

Maybe such a site might have info or a forum where you can find old maps that would include info about where dummy lines were located.
