Well, I call it more of an outdoor "classroom" in my yard rather than an offical "hunt" which I did so I can get the feel of my new Nox 800 before venturing elsewhere.

First let me say I was not really surprised nor discouraged with the lack of good finds in my own yard as the land was likely woods about 6 years before we moved here, so it was not the fault of the Nox but rather simply the location.

Having only ever used a Bounty Hunter Tracker IV before getting the Nox 800 I need a few more outdoor "classroom" hours, not complaining though, it is really fun learning something with such potential ! :D

One thing is I need to educate myself more on knowing what VDI numbers are worth digging and what numbers to pass up, the Bounty Hunter did not have a VDI number display so using the numbers is new to me.

Now I don't intend on making a habit of posting such unnoteworthy finds, but just doing so since it was my first "hunt" with the Nox.

Though the finds themselves are unnoteworthy, I was amazed at the difference in sensitivity from the Bounty Hunter, for example I was amazed at how strong the signal was for that tiny snap button as deep as it was !

At least I know when I find a location that has good stuff to find that the Nox 800 can definitely find it !

A tiny snap button, 2 metal fragments, a metal piece to something, an a Zincoln

Best of luck with your new machine. Give it some time and you will get the hang of it. I have the 600, so I will not be much help on all the advanced settings. As far as the ID numbers go some numbers overlap. For example 11, 12 ,13 can be a nickel, pull tab or a gold ring. And the numbers also depend on what else is around the target. I do know that it does well unmasking targets once you get the hang of it. Best of luck and have fun.

Congrats on the New 800. I got my March 2018 after using an AT Pro for 3 years. Quite a learning curve for me.

My mistake was trying to learn everything about the 800 ASAP.

Stay in the different standard modes and leave tone bins for later.

Lots of TID charts on the Internet. search equinox 800 TID in google and select images and you will find them.

The key to the 800 is really good ground balancing before you start a hunt and ground balance again when you switch modes. No need to re-ground balance when you switch frequencies. Also Noise cancel at the start of each hunt. Of course you probably know most of this.

Also at higher sensitivity the 800 sees and reports every speck of metal so it will be real chatty. You don't need high sensitivity to get deeper.

I have another post for people new to the 800. It was aimed at the newbie new to metal detecting and the 800.

Thanks, I think I remember seeing a number as low as 2 if there is one that low, most of that stuff today ran from about 9 thru 20 and I even saw 32 and 39 pop up a few times. The overlap and unmasking are good points !

Thanks, I was staying with just the standard modes for now, today I did mostly "Park 1" though I did try "Park 2" a couple minutes, of course I had to give the "Gold" mode a try  I got a signal on the Gold mode but could not find anything, even the pinpointer said something was there, then it wasn't :?: …...went back to "Park 1" after that  (I did notice the gold mode was chatty)

I saw that post you mentioned, good points, thanks !

I'll have to study some of those ID charts to try to limit my trash digging

(I did do the noise cancel and ground balance)

Congrats on the new Equinox! I found that a good place to learn the vid numbers of a new machine is in the tot lots, lots of easy digging and plenty of coins in a relatively small space. Best of luck and Happy Hunting!

Thanks, very good idea, being in a small town I only remember seeing one public tot lot and the play area is solid rubber so no digging there  I'll have to watch for any others while driving in the area that might be sand or wood chips.

Just wanted to add for those who may not be familiar with the contest ScubaDetector had recently, my new Nox 800 and other goodies were prizes I won in Scuba's very generous contest ! (includes a Pro-PointerAT, Lesche digger, and finds pouch !)

Check out that contest thread in the "ended" section of the "contests" section of the forum to see pics of all the neat prizes (as well as the extra goodies Phil of Myers Metal Detectors threw in for free !) Thanks again to Scuba and Phil !!!!

Just got a direct link to my post with pics of all the prizes and extra goodies -

Bet that will make some members wish they had entered more often on Scuba Detectors contest.

I tried to get more response from folks on the forum. I failed. The owners and mods will not get involved. I think because of the scammers out there. Remember Aloha Metal Detectors?

Anyway, they would not endorse or advertise the contests to get others to join this great site. In fact they would not comment on anything at all that I did.

Two high end metal detectors, scoops, pinpointers, and other prizes were given away with absolutely no endorsement. I can say that Meyers and Sunspot gave me some breaks but I fully understood they needed to survive and make money. Nothing I gave away I got free or asked for it free.

I think folks want a car or a trip to Hawaii given away free and although I am generous, I wasn't that generous. I am a guest of this forum like everyone else on here. My help wasn't wanted or needed. Maybe one day another will come by that desires to be generous.

I do appreciate the folks that kept trying. Some wouldn't even join for unknown reasons. Well we all have one life. I am living it the way I feel is right and have to let everyone else do the same. Enjoy Gary. You won the last big contest I will ever do on here.

I think it was super nice of Scuba Detector to share some of his good fortune by putting on a contest, and give back to the metal detecting comunity that he is part of on here .I always enjoy his post and seeing what new he has found underwater.

I pass up 15,16,17,18,19,20 mostly it's junk
Aluminium can be 3 through 12 but that also can be gold.
13,14 can be nickels gold ring or pulltabs.

Thanks very much Scuba !!!!

For a contest that was not benefitting you personally I think you went WAY above and beyond generous to offer a new Nox 800 detector, Pro-Pointer AT, Lesche digger and finds pouch as prizes in a free contest where all it took was picking some numbers once a week after qualifying by making a small number of posts. As someone who was on a tight budget as far as hobby stuff you can be absolutely sure those prizes are sincerely appreciated and will be very much enjoyed !

Thanks, I appreciate that info, as tempted as I was to dig every signal just to see what it was, it would be nice to be able to reduce the time I spend digging trash when possible

…...with the understanding that to find gold we might have to dig some pull-tabs too
