Hello all. I am new at this. Anyone from Eastern Pa around to give me pointers, that would be great.

Welcome from Michigan! First of all, we all know that the folks in Pennsylvania lose a lot of things because the people there find a lot of things. You got that going for you. Secondly, get to know your detector on known items so that when you're in the field you'll know what's buried. Third, post all of your finds, junk and all. Lastly, find good locations. Good luck.

Welcome from Maryland. For just starting out, I would dig everything till you learn your detector. What township in PA ?

Welcome to the world of detecting. It's a wonderful addiction to have. Setup a "test garden" in your yard to train on and learn basics. Use different coinage at different depths. Make yourself a map of your test garden and mark it somehow. Don't immediately bury the items at ridiculous depths. I would not recommend going deeper than 8 inches for the deepest target in your garden. Over time they sink further down. A test garden is very important because that will always be a "standard" in your mind how things in a controlled environment are reported by your detector. You need confidence building time with your detector.
Patience is very important and a dose of reality. Facing the reality it takes time for you to learn that detector. Patience to keep on detecting after a bad day where you found nothing but junk. For every junk item you dig and thought it was good that is experience. There is no substitute for experience. Do not ever be hard on yourself, just keep on being flexible and open-minded.
This is a very enjoyable thing to do but it isn't always about finding great things every trip. It's more about getting away from whatever stresses you and entering a state of total attention on the detector. I personally find that after a certain amount of time detecting things begin to really click. Sounds weird, but after a while doing this you will be able to look at a place and tell where the most activity may have been. That's where you want to be with that detector. Think about what people did, and where they would congregate. Focus on that area. They HAD to drop SOMETHING. Even a weird item can be interesting. You're trying to figure out what it may be, how it got there, etc. Let this be fun time for you.
Metal detecting can be a great way to relieve stress if you allow it to be. And that is a a priceless gift.
