New Minelab Equinox

Thanks for posting.
Looks like there's someone who already bought a backup battery for a detector he doesn't have yet! I think I'll wait and see if one is even needed. I've never hunted for more than 12 hours straight and that's how long the EQ battery is supposed to last. However I can see using an auxiliary pack as a counter balance if needed.

Agree. I don't have to charge my CTX on every hunt. Could probably make it 3 hunts? If its like the deus I tried it will benefit from some counterweight though. Just hope the shaft is sturdier than the deus.

A Bit Premature ???

Hello All,
I am a bit of a newbee to this MDing and have read about this machine and all the hype. Is it really that good ??? First of all, I can't find what's not there. I am not willing to spend $900 on a machine just for bragging rights. Show me first and then I might just be interested. Maybe it detects deeper than most but are there any other advantages ??? I will wait for actual user reports before I get too excited about the newest, greatest ???
My AT Pro has done right by me on coins. Maybe doesn't go deep enough but I am doing this for fun and a hobby, not in competition with anyone. I am not into digging to China for a penny !!
Not being a wise guy, just knowing what I can find here where I live. I also am retired and on a limited income.

Hi there.

This thread is so far mostly for information purposes.
Not much actually on performance data or characteristics.

So, how does the detecting public start actually finding out the real deal with this detector??

Someone or group of folks will have to take the plunge and purchase.

The Equinox will get graded for sure by many here and other places.

Some things I beleive it will be graded on.

Cost vs performance overall.

Ease of actual use to get at least above average performance.

Weight
Balance
Durability
Quality of service provided by manufacturer if problems develop****
Tone quality
Ability to separate, perform in ferrous materials like iron and nails.
Ability to customize.
Ease to interpret screen data.
Ease to customize.
Viewing ability of screen data in various scenarios related to sun, darkness, glare, etc
Ground balance system
Detector's ability to strike smaller, medium and larger nonferrous.
Detector's ability to strike lower, medium and higher conductive nonferrous.
How does the audio transition when faced with polluted sites, be it ferrous and or modern trash (nonferrous).
Emi handling as far as quietness and mitigation.
How does Equinox play with itself, with a group of Equinoxers hunting together.
Battery system/charging system
Ability and performance to hunt in salt water and wet salt sand.
Detector's ability to give ID of targets and how depth affects.
Detector's ability to perform in medium minerlized soils.
Detectrors ability to perform in high to very high minerlized soils.
Detector's ability to detect gold nuggets.
Detector's ability to cherry pick coins in USA, nickels and higher conductive coins.
Wireless headphone lag.
Wireless headphone actual tone quality.

So the list is long, and one would expect it to be for a supposed multi purpose waterproof vlf detector. But some of the things mentioned above, not all are important to all folks considering purchase.

I haven't bought a backup battery for a detector I don't have. That picture is of a battery for my White's XLT that I 3d printed. It has a LiPo battery that I purchased off Amazon in a 3d printed housing that I modeled and printed myself. It cost me $15 and lasts about 44 hours. I plan on modeling and printing a housing that will attach to the Equinox when I get it to hold some as yet purchased battery pack for charging purposes. I won't do a single thing until I actually have my Equinox in hand and can get all the measurements I need.

The other picture of the battery backup attached(with rubber bands to test weight distribution) to a detector IS an Equinox 800 that was a test mule for Steve Herschbach. He simply did it to see how it felt in the hand.

I wasn't referring to you. Look at TedinVT's post on page 2.

You wont know until your average Joes start using them. I know one famous tester used a certain detector on gold at the beach. Supposedly was hitting it at 14" deep. others who hunt where he does guessed he was actually using a buried beercan to get a hit to sell detectors. Its like cars. Never trust the dealership. Let your friends try to blow the engine and roast the tires. You save money that way. Heck I got several thousand in detectors that were "The best!" sitting in a spare bedroom with dust:lol:

Whether a detector "is really that good" for you is VERY dependent on your soil conditions and the type of hunting you do. I hunt silver coins and in my area the AT Pro wasn't cutting it. I got the Etrac and it's awesome for my soil conditions and what I hunt for.

If the Equinox was a lighter weight, waterproof Etrac I would definitely get one. But it's not as good on high conductors as Etrac/CTX. And it doesn't have FE/Co numbers that I really like and is has a built-in battery which I don't like. I may get one, I'm not sure yet.

Used Etracs have been selling at good prices lately. I may get another one.

So far the Equinox has done very well for me.

It has caused a selling frenzy making it a buyer's market. I now have a CTX 3030, E-Trac, Deus with 9.5 elliptical HF coil and WS5's, and 2 DFX's.

Gotta love that NOX so far :D

I apologize for the assumption....the link that was posted literally went directly to my post.

The thing is, technically ANY battery charging pack will work to recharge the detector on the go. The speed and number of charges effectively would be the only difference between battery packs. I have probably 4 of those packs. I keep a high amp/high capacity one for my GoPros to charge 3 batteries at a time. I have a smaller one I use to charge my phone that I 3d Printed a casing for to make it look like a Fusioncore from Fallout 4.

Ultimately, I will have a batterypack in some housing that I will design for those "oops" moments when I forgot to charge the day before...that's why I have the one for the GoPros too.

No doubt, many will sell for an Equinox.

I don’t know who does more copy and pasting... Tennessee Sharpshooter, Sod-Buster, or the good folks in charge of the Minelab Treasure Talk?

Just giving you a hard time Tn. I knew when I read that post of Steve’s on his forum it would just be regurgitated by Minelab on Treasure Talk. They sure can draw out stuff, almost as bad as a lawyer. Still patiently (or un-patiently) waiting for the 3rd installment of the Equinox series. If Steve keeps posting those awesome articles, Minelab will keep putting us off. Lol.

Lol, you might be right.
About the last part above.

Maybe the first part too.lol

It's a dirty job, somebody got to do it.

Remember not all folks are following as closely as others are.
Some folks may just be tuning in.
