Hello im new to detecting , I finally have some money and free time so im ready to buy one. I have a person trying to sell me a Fisher 1266x m-scope metal detector.works perfectly and he would like try to get $300 he says. It looks mint but i do not know much about them. Its older and has a 10" coil i think and no screen of any kind. Should I buy this? I can try and get it for $200-250 im sure. I only heard that they can detect over a foot deep and are as good as the new expensive detectors. Thanks, Steve . I will buy another one along with this one if Its worth it.

You're live. It may take a little while for some one that has used that detector to respond.

I would suggest the Fisher F2 package. Some people would suggest you start with a non Target ID machine. But I think just the opposite.

I agree with khouse. Buy a Fisher F-2 with the twin coil package and learn how to use it.

It has a readable screen, its light on the arm/wrist and is easy to use.

Look up Digger27 posts on the F-2 and you will be amazed what it can do.

Good luck!!

I have owned the F2 and the 1266 x, I would suggest the F2 probably a little lighter and less chatter of the 1266 but if you can get the 1266 at a good price go for it.

The 1266 goes deep but often just a nail , the numbers come in handy with the F2
both will act up near power lines as well as many models..

HH BOTH GOOD

The 1266x is one of the best and deepest relic machines ever made, especially with the 10.5 Spider coil, however it's more fore experienced users, and is geared more towards relic hunting. If you plan to coin hunt, or hit parks and school yards, I would suggest something else in the $300 range. If you plan to mostly relic hunt for say Civil War artifacts rather than coins it might be worth a shot, I'd offer $225 and try to get it for $250. They also made an XB? model which broke down smaller, and came with a hard case.

Thanks everyone!

im sorry i am still getting use to the forum and just seen all the responses and am thankful to you all and glad to be aboard. i made a verbal deal for $240 and i am getting the 1266x or xb tomorrow , i will look into another md soon but some of the reviews i read in the past few days made me think that i better grab this deal . it should only take me a few years to figure it out and find that lost treasure here in Salem , Ma

XB would be even better, I believe they collapsed into 3 pieces instead of 2 and came with a hard case. Not that it makes any performance difference but a hard case is always nice to have, and the ability to break it down smaller to hike into wooded sites. Also, if the detector is in good shape, you could probably make a few bucks off it if you ever sell it. 325-350 wouldn't be unreasonable for a nice 1266x, maybe a few dollars more for an Xb with case.

thanks ! :) i just picked it up for $240 and it has a 10 1/2" spider coil is all i know. the guy almost didnt sell it but he said his shoulder has issues and he needs surgery , he mentioned that some of the newer MDs will pass some stuff off as junk when its really some thing good. im running down the end of my street to a old pirate cove here in Salem and will be back in a hour with at least a bottle cap :D i need to figure all these knobs out and was happy to hear it can go under water a few feet which i did not know. off hunting and will report back later!

Don't take it under water! Only the 10.5 coil is waterproof, the control box isn't. I wouldn't even hunt in the water at all with it. The sens knob controls depth, it's best to run as high as you can while still being stable ie. not chattery. The disc knobs control what you find, the higher the disc the less trash you will find but it will also make you miss gold and other type metals as well as lessen the depth of the detector. I would run the sens about 50% and put both disc knobs to 1-2 for now until you get the hang of it. Keep the coil low and parallel to the ground at all times.
