Hi all -
Very glad to have found this forum (found it via MDHTALK site).

There are no dots on the map in Vermont -- but there should be one soon! Thus I have to call myself a loner.

I have been reading much on this forum and on the MDHTALK site. Very helpful information in both places.

I won't be doing any salt water stuff. Some shoreline stuff on Lake Champlain, but not enough to spend the dollars for an underwater rig!

Mostly back yard, relative's farm, riverbanks. Anywhere else I can legally go. I'm in Northwestern Vermont just south of the Quebec border.

Right now I'm thinking of acquiring an AT 250 or 350. Because I'm retired, this will be the ONLY machine I will ever own. I also want a pin pointer.

QUESTION: So many people speak well of the Garrett PP -- my question is, does the PP stand for Pin Pointer or Pointer Pro? If the latter, does the plain old pin pointer work well?

QUESTION: Anyone have experience with Colonial Metal Detecting in CT?

Anyway, I want to thank all the sticky writers for their helpful work. A gold mine (sans MD) for sure!

Cheers,
Clair

Vermonster is a member on here and he used to reside there - maybe a good resource!

Welcome aboard!

Unfortunately though, I took up detecting 17 years after leaving there........ ;)

Welcome to the site. There actually are 2-3 others that I know of that are from Vermont, and post on here occasionally. Maybe they will chime in here sometime.

Welcome to the forum :)!

For whatever reason, nobody's questions ever get answered in their first post. I'll break this chain and answer some of your questions.

There are 2 "Pin-pointers" from garrett, both will suffice, but the orange one is better.

Garrett Pro-Pointer (Black stick)
This one is not water-proof and has less depth the the orange one.

Garrett Pro-Pointer AT (orange stick) AKA "Carrot"
This one is water-proof and has multiple volume settings, and sensitivity settings, the increased depth is a big deal for me, I'd recommend spending the extra $25

This is tough, because you won't know if the hobby is something you'll stick with until you actually start hunting, I personally would recommend going with the AT-Pro right off the bat. Although if not in the budget.. the Ace 350 is a great machine, but it just doesn't do well in area's with power lines. none the less, it's a good machine, and it's re-sale value is up there.

Hope this helps, HH

Welcome aboard from Fl. Mike (Socal Hopeless) gave very good advice IMO. The Carrot and the ATP is worth the extra cash. I you are around water you will be wanting to up grade before long with the 250 or 350. The ATP is waterproof. That's important because. If you hit a hot spot and it starts raining you can keep swinging. Good hunting.

Hi Vermonster -- and Socal --
I PM'd you -- BECAUSE I live in Swanton and would love advice on places in this area that are safe to go to. Will have detector (from a forum member!!!) sometime next week - can't wait. The only folks I know are artists here and they think I'm crazy!

Socal --- thanks for the advice -=- I will be getting a used AT 350 but very very lightly used - aka new! And, this is something I've wanted to do for years - so I'm in for the long haul, and the slow work. Don't expect miracles, just interesting times.

Cheers,
Clair

Thanks all

and DirtyDog --didn't scroll all the way down before I posted.

Vermontster can't help -- so I will remain a loner in VT --

and the AT Pro is definitely out of my reach. But I know I will be very happy with the 350 --

I'm so excited I can hardly stand it!

Thanks again for all the "welcomes" and the advice.

Cheers, and here's to my posting my first backyard find next week!

You will love your ace 350, it is my first machine, and still the machine I know best, I've slayed many silvers and other relics with it, have fun and dig every signal for a while!

Welcome to the forum from eastern NC.

Used AT Pros can be found in the $400 range, not much more than retail on the 350. Send a message the sponsors here for for unadvertised special pricing. The link to sponsors is in the upper right corner. Good luck.

Got mine (used for 30 mins.) from fine and generous seller on this forum. Plus the new Carrot pp -- both for $275. So I am a very happy camper!

Replied to your PM. I wont be back up there till July next year. Maybe I will bring the detector along though and if you're still active on here, look you up for a hunt.......

You made a good choice Clair. The 350 is a very nice machine. I hope you find some great things with it. Happy swinging.

Welcome from NY's capital district.

As far as Colonial Metal detectors they are great. I have bought a number of things from them and always had great service.
