For most coins (non collectible) I usually pour cheap Hot Sauce over them and let soak for an hour or two and then rinse thoroughly. Comes out looking almost new. I can find quart jar of hot sauce at a local salvage grocery store for a dollar or so just about every time I need some for the job.
