Moral Dilema!?

Just return it.

Where's the fun in doing anything if you can't help out someone every once in a while.

...treat people how you would want to be treated by them.

This is sort of where I would stand too. As long as their description matches what you've found I'd return it with a smile. The ring would probably mean a lot more to them than the few dollars it would bring you. Just my 2 cents. :D

nice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just return it.

You want to lie to people and make money run for office.

If you want to relax and have fun then metal detect.

Stop playing lawyer and just treat people how you would want to be treated by them.[/QUOT

The more I detect, the more I think like this..

Sorry, shoulda kept a tighter grip on it. Metal detecting is an EXPENSIVE hobby, and finding gold is one way to offset the costs. I've said it before and I'll say it again, if it means that bloody much to these people, then they can go buy a metal detector and search for it themselves.

The one exception, is if someone asks me out to their property to find something, then I would do my best to find it, and return it if found. But if I find it without prior knowledge.. finders keepers.

bvpe, My rules are never ever trust a third party.....case closed! I got Black beard really bad in me.....Smooth, Always looking for a new mate! ;) :pirate:

If they were women's wedding bands that went missing, then I'd say
give them back but they are men's and men don't put much sentiment
into these things. Give them some old golfballs or something you dug up
and they'll be happy.

Besides, you did all this with a Bounty Hunter with the dreams of getting
an E-trac. One step closer to your dream, keep your mouth shut. :wow:

What he said

My sentiments as well...

What's a "Pirate " to do?

This is what I'm thinking...........Next time that I'm there I will ask for a name and phone number of those claiming to have lost atheir rings. I'll talk to them and have them describe their ring to me and take it from there. The potential at this site leads me down the path of keeping in the good graces of the owner. So I think it would be worth it to attempt to help the folks out. I appreciate your comments.

Here is what I would do... I would not let on that I found them but I would tell them if I find them I would like a finders fee, if they balk at that then I would keep them... I personally don't return items unless I am asked to find them in the first place... I didn't get into the hobby for karma, I got in the hobby to find nice stuff... some won't like my opinion but its mine ;) Its up to you... it doesn't matter what we think...

I agree with most on here. Don't admit you found anything. Ask them for a description and tell them if you find it, you will let them know. That way you're not showing your cards. Maybe they didn't think about metal detecting the area for their lost items until they saw you. You can't fault people for being human. We should always try to help others when possible. If the description matches, give them up. You will get it back tenfold.

Congrats on your decision. I'm not a believer in karma, but you'll sleep better knowing you at least attempted to do the right thing.

Let's say you happen to have one or more of the returnable rings. When the day of returning comes and they attempt to "reward" you, it would be a good time to inquire as to weather they own some old property or not. That the best reward they could give you would be permission to hunt these properties.

If I am asked to search an area for a particular item, I will (and have) help. If I find items while searching MY selected sites, (remember, my interest is cache hunting), then all finds are mine. I have had (on the occasions that I beach hunt) had people ask me if I found "any rings, because I lost one", without offering a description. My reply, is "NO". That is a typical scam that most beach hunters are aware of. I did (and still have) a laminated card I carry when I am in a playful mood at the beach. If someone asks me if I found a ring, I give them a specific description. Then when they say "That's it!!" I laugh and walk away. Once the individual brought a cop and said "He won't return my ring.", I said what is the description again? They repeated what I said in front of the officer, and I handed him my card. He laughed and told me to "Have fun." and told the individual to not try it again or he would arrest them for attempted fraud. RickO

So, I'm curious...what did you decide? As long as you can sleep with yourself at the end of the day whatever you decided is right for you.

I myself will have to side with the minority
I do this hobby to find cool stuff and to put $ in my pocket
But i do get a kick out of returning something to someone like a wedding band
when they smile an thank me. than i would if i scrap it for $25.00
but if someone can afford to loose a $ 10.000 ring or neckless and i find it
I am going to giggle all the way to the bank

$25? Have you seen the price of gold lately? 5 grams of 10k is something like $100

If you had a white's machine you could return it, write a story about it, get your story posted on the white's website, and get a $100 certificate.

I don't know if the other brands do this or not.

As the others have said. Say you haven't seen any, but ask them to describe
the rings and get their contact details.
Say you'l be in touch if you find them.
