Maybe a bale seal??? Maybe just a lead blob???

Please see attached images. Seems to be made of lead. Has the creamish white patina from being in the grounds.

Do you have any ideas as to what it might be?

If it is a bale seal, should I see anything on the flat sides?

Usually the slots on the sides held the wire from which it was attached to the bale. Alot of times there will be iron remnants on the seals, but not always. Looks like a bale seal to me, but I'm no expert. Cool find!

Looks like a seal. Sometimes there's no lettering or marks, they just clamped a wire down.

I personally leave the white on my old lead, keeps my items looking old. I find with minie balls you can just scrub with a little harder nylon brush and soap and water and it will come off.

Good point, but the one i am thinking of has some lettering with the white partially obscuring it and I'd like to see what it says.

The white alteration is lead oxide. Personally I would not try to remove it, and after handling anything with lead oxide, wash your hands! You do not want to ingest it!
