I got the Equinox 800 and a Legend that I'm trying to decide which to keep as my backup to my Deus. The NOX and I are clicking quite well but I don't feel I'm giving the Legend a fair chance according to the reports I read from others. I'm finding the menu system very frustrating and confusing. It can't be that tough. I've owned the Racers and Simplex and thought they were easy to understand. I'm thinking I need to reset the Legend back to factory, and start with the factory Park. I would change the tone to 60, as I like the full tone when hunting. I want to hear the difference in my targets.

Does this sound like a good plan? I will be hunting mainly in our city park heavy in old & modern trash.

I have the LG15, LG 28, and LG 35 coils. Nokta BlueTooth headphones. I'm running version 1.13

Thanks

I have had the Legend for exactly 1 year and was a bit overwhelmed at first coming using an ATPro. It took some reading of the manual and a bunch of YT videos before I started feeling comfortable making changes. If you have made changes inadvertently, a factory reset wouldn't hurt.

The menu really isn't that hard once you've dug into it. I've added a couple of custom coin shooter programs. I like 6 tones personally and after awhile you can call out your coin before digging it. 60 tone's is great IF you discriminate each distinctive tone, too much for me.

Give it chance with the stock programs. You got this.

If you’re already using and are comfortable with 50 tones on the Equinox, then sure, nothing wrong with using 60 tones on the Legend as you’re describing.

To set up, make sure you’re in Park using the left or right arrow keys. Then press the “settings/power” key once to activate the menu bar. Use the left or right arrow keys again to highlight the “tone settings” icon on the menu bar, which will cause the tone settings submenu to appear above it (looks like a speaker with a musical note next to it). Use the “plus” key to move up and highlight the submenu - I prefer to think of it as an “up” key since it’s shaped that way and it moves you up to the submenu. Use the lef/right keys if necessary to highlight the “number of tones” submenu (looks like a musical note with numbers after it). The menu bar should look like this now:

Use the up/down (plus/minus) keys to select the number of tones to 60. Then press either the “accept/pinpoint” button to go back to the settings menu, or in your case, just press the settings button to go right back to detecting. If you don’t do anything else, every time you turn the machine on after that, it will start in Park with 60 tones.

What about a factory reset? I have referred to the manual, several times, and found how to reset a profile, but is that the reset that takes the entire detector back to factory?

Also, which coil would be best to start with? I have tried going over the area where the very deep coins are with the LG35 and get nothing new, same with the NOX 800 and 11" coil, and the old stuff is 8" or deeper. Should I just try my luck with the 6" or contine to use the13"?

Reset go to the little man icon (user profile icon) and hold PinPoint down for up to 30 seconds, it'll show (FD) factory defaults.

The smaller the coil the better separation of targets. The larger the coil, the more depth from my experiences.

Terry, I have been over the manual a bunch of times. Never saw anything on a profile reset, only factory reset. Now you can unsave a profile but the settings are still there till you change them. One thing I don't care for is when you save a user profile, that profile is saved in all modes, not just one specific mode. Which is not completely accurate when they advertise 16 different profiles. In my mind that only makes 4. I guess you could loosely interpret it because of the different modes and profiles but thats not how I see it.
As far as navigating the settings, I am a blue collar scholar, no background in electrical or engineering. You on the other hand have worked with computers all your life and are a real techy kind of guy so if I can figure out the settings I'm sure you will have no problems within a few hours. I have about 75 hrs. right now and feel confident on changing settings in the field without getting lost or confused. I remember with the Etrac I would get that way for about the first couple months. Too many sub-menus. Fast forward to the Legend the sub menus seem to be right where they should be. And thats coming from the simplicity of navigating the Equinox menu for 6 years.
Now which one to keep. Keep them both for now. I would. The cost of a Legend or a used 800 is not all that much compared to other higher end models. At least till you have had the chance to see what the Legend is capable of. So far from what I've seen I can't say its better than the 800 but its certainly no less of a machine. It does have a few quirks, only time will tell if I continue to use it or go back to my 800. Good luck. Mark

Yes I struggled with the E-Trac for quite a while myself. That is why I continue to not give up on the Legend. The E-Trac turned out to be the best detector I have ever owned. Well, the CTX was a great detector as well, just hard to handle. I did find and reset to factory my Legend. Put it on the Profile Icon and hold the accept/reject button for 8 seconds until the screen says FD. I took it to a few tot lots this morning. Just found coinage, but it seemed to be fine. Hit a lot of small foil.

I did the reset from the Profile icon and it seems much better. I put it on Park M2, for best sensitivity to smalls & gold, and upped the tones to 60. I liked it much better. I didn't find anything great, but I got lots of small foil and a few pieces of bling. I just hunted this tot lot less than a week ago. Shows you how much my tot lots get used. I was hoping the earring would be my first gold of the year, but just bling.

The Legend will probably get more updates and get better. I doubt the Nox 800 will see any more.

The most recent update for the Equinox 600/800 was July 2020 when they added 4 kHz to the single frequency rotation. Coupled with the release of the 700/900 in late 2022, it’s pretty safe to say that Minelab has moved on from the 600/800 series - there’s definitely no reason to expect any more updates.

Nokta has been impressive in their update support of the Legend, putting out 5 updates (6 if you include the threshold volume update) since release of the machine at the tail end of 2021. Some of those were necessary to fix issues/bugs, but they also added many great features and implemented customer suggestions through those free updates. That said, the frequency of their updates has slowed significantly with time (as would be suspected). There has been a rumor for a couple months that another update is coming…hopefully that’s true, but if it is, I would expect it’ll be the last one for the Legend (or at least the last free one). At this point, I have to believe that Nokta is working on the successor to the Legend (Nokta Epic??), which would mean they are ready to turn the page on the Legend and updates would cease so they wouldn’t run the risk of undermining future sales.

Updates are a nice enhancement to modern detector technology, but they tend to make manufacturers lazy. They are willing to release a detector, with known issues, knowing they can later put out an update to address it. In time, the users become the testers. They start throwing out detectors left and right making new models obsolete much quicker. Let's face it, the true value of a detector takes time to rise to the top. I use the E-Trac as an example. 20+ years later and still highly rated. Twenty years from now how many of these new roosters will still be crowing?

Resetting a profile is supposed to restore factory defaults for that profile... So you can switch to a different profile and play around if you want to do head to head testing as resets don't effect everything, just the selected profile.

**EDIT** For the Legend ^^^

When you save settings in one mode they do not carry over to another mode, you can literally save 4 custom settings for each mode for a total of 16 custom user settings, again 4 for each mode 4 to each little man

The other thing you can either do a full factory default reset or you can reset just one of the little men

to do a full factory default reset while the legend is booted up click the power button one time, then move over to the little man once on the little man hold the pin point reject button down until you see FD in the Legend screen

to do a reset of a custom user profile while the legend is booted up move over to the little man then push the up arrow select the little man you want to reset while on the one you want to reset click the right arrow you will see it has put a circle thing on that little man or to the right of that little man, and then hold the pin point reject button until you see the little man no longer has a check mark in it, this is the one that I am not fully sure of because I do not know if it wipes that one little man in every mode or just the mode you are currently in
