Let's see your macro/close-up pics!

got lucky with these shots. I took them with my Sony digital, handheld. An MD find.

Are these photos taken with a special MACRO feature in the camera? I asked a guy at the Fred Meyer camera counter and he claims macro modes are obsolete because a 42 megapixel image is so large you don't need to get super close because the level of detail will allow you to blow up a portion of the image you want to look at... but I wasn't buying it.

42 megapixel?

The top of the line Nikon DSLR at $8000 is about 24 MP.

My camera takes very large size pics and cropping from these isn't close to what macro can do.

This guy does not have an inkling to a hint of a clue!

I suggest he should be moved to the food section where someone who passes on this kind of misinformation should be bagging groceries.
A much Better use of his "expertise", in my opinion.

Agreed, point for point right down the line!

No matter how dense photoimaging sensors get, there will ALWAYS be a call for macro capabilities just as there will always be a call for telephoto capabilities.

I'm surprised this meyer "expert" doesn't proclaim digital photography itself obsolete since photographic film blows the doors off the resolution capabilities of ANY digital sensor!

Lol, 42 megapixel is enormous!! that's like for billboards. As far as I know, only medium and large format sensors can get into that range. What he could be trying to say is that in macro mode all the camera is doing is a digital enlargement of a wider frame (cropping) - which could be the case on some cameras, but definitely not all.

Cropping is always worse than getting closer or zooming in, and the only way to get close to small objects is with a macro feature / lens. Cropping creates noise in the shadows and highlights - it also magnifies any motion blur from camera movement. The size it can be printed also becomes limited.

great thread!

See the depth of field on arks photo! Maybe a fast
L type lens shooting wide open and very fast with
Some nice diffused lighting... I've got to figure out
How. Nice shot Ark.
