I'll soon be 73 years old and retiring and looking for new hobbies so I thought I'd try Metal Detecting and magnet fishing.
I live in Millstadt, Illinois near a lot of old farm houses and the town was founded in the 1800's. My detector is a Bounty Hunter Tracker IV and the first time I used it in my yard, I found a dime and a penny.

Yesterday, I went to and old tavern near me that has been closed for many years and found 16 coins near the surface in the gravel. I found 4 dimes, one quarter and a bunch of pennies.

How come, when people lose money, it's mostly PENNIES? I'm going out again today and see what I can find. Hope ya'll had a great Christmas.

Mr. Booker. PS: I also have the Dr. OTEK pin pointer and it seems to work great.

Pennies were lost the most as at one time a few pennies would surely buy a lot of goods. When wages were 50 cents an hour, better chance your pocket would have more pennies than dimes or nickels.

These days, who wants pennies in their pockets, not a big deal if you lose one, two,.....many won't even stoop low enough to pick one up off the ground.

Keep at it and pretty soon you'll be amazed at how many quarters you're finding.

In one ball field this summer I found 168 quarters, 38 dimes and only 25 pennies.

Pretty amazing for a small town.

Welcome to 73 which is what I turned this year. I had only dabbled a little in detecting until this summer when I bought a bounty hunter quicksilver Once I got the hang of it, I really found a lot of stuff, especially in my own yard. I also live in Illinois but about 2 or 3 hundred miles north of you. Late in the summer I upgraded to a garrett pro 250. The main gain to me has been that it does a pretty good job of discriminating out pulltabs. The ground is now frozen but I ended the season with a total of 677 coins. Face value just above $44.00. The sport got me out in the fresh air and provided lots of non exertive exercise. One thing I would recommend is to get a good pinpointer, helps a lot. Those $15.00 ones aren't much good though. Welcome to the hobby and happy hunting.

Welcome from South Carolina !!!!

Hey, pennies can add up, and you might find a rare penny !

The BH Tracker IV is a really good budget level detector, a great deal for the low price, I found a good video someone made to help those who are new to the Tracker IV -

We are never too old to learn. Detecting is an excellent hobby to keep a retired individual busy. Some folks will tell you that I am addicted. I will be 78 in a few days and thoroughly enjoy being outdoors with a detector in my hand.

MrBooker welcome to the forum and back into the hobby/addiction. You will be making some awesome finds, just remember, we like pictures.
