Hey All!

I have owned my Equinox 600 for a couple of years now. I use it primarily for the beach and it works great-a little chirpy on black sand, but most of the time I don't have any issues. An acquaintance of mine has offered their Nox 800 to me for $600. There's no warranty left, but he says it still works fine and there are no issues with leakage or coil ear breakage. For those of you in the know, is the 800 that much better than the 600? I don't do any gold nugget hunting, so the extra gold mode won't get any use, but if you guys out there think it's a good idea, I may very well switch. Thanks!

There are a few extra audio settings, more recovery speed settings, more iron bias settings. Otherwise, for just beach hunting I wouldn't make that switch. Save your money for a slightly used Nox 700 when people start to sell them or for a Manticore.

I have the 600, upgrading to the 800 just didn't seem worth it to me.

When I was looking to upgrade I was leaning towards the legend since it basically had the same performance as the nox 800 but had a few extra features such as the mineralization meter and the ferrocheck, plus they're still providing updates for it. Minelab has basically abandoned the 600 and 800, don't expect any new updates for those in the future. Eventually I ended up getting the manticore since I really wanted the 2d ID map.

BUT for $600 you can get a brand new legend vs that used 800!

I concur, either find a gently used 700 or pick up a brand spanking new legend. Either should be a slight upgrade over the 600. The 800 would be more of a lateral move in your situation IMO. Good luck out there!

When I bought my 600, the extra $300 for the 800 just to get a dedicated gold mode and a few other features didn't seem worth it. I'm not in an area where gold prospecting would be profitable.

All of the above seems right, 800 has some more adjustments to make but raw performance should be the same. I actually think they should’ve just had one or the other, but it was done to accommodate price points and that’s all.

Once you ‘get past’ the different audio accessories, wireless, the EQUINOX 600 can generally be considered as an EQUINOX 800 with a simplified feature set.

Personally, I'm one of those "better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it."

I totally agree with this.
