Is metal detecting worth it?

I love this hobby more than anythign else I have done I still love fishing tho! I have found a 14k gold ring and a 14k ear ring and tons of clad so far. I have not paid everythign off but I have no doubt about it that I will this year. Metal detecting provides me with fun that I will never be able to get anywhere else.

MDing is "worth it" but alot depends on where you live/detect. I got started in this hobby in Montana, a good place for ghost towns, gold mines, etc. San Antonio Texas was not a place to MD, the local government was not friendly and you were in an area that the Mexican Mafia, local gangs, and drug dealers considered "their turf".

Colorado is similar to Montana in many aspects. Better sites and better people. Plus you have gold sites almost anywhere you turn. I've got five metal detectors for a reason!!!:yes::yes:

I have never had a problem with anybody while detecting, in fact around here everyone is interested and always asks about it. Some guy is driving down from Duluth Minnesota to buy my old Bounty Hunter 505 he is just getting into the hobby. I am going to show him how to use the machine to the fullest potential.

I'm totally "fussed up" today between remodeling contractors and trying to get my mom on a flight to Denver to start her radiation treatments....I actually have six, not five, detectors. I've had my BH so long that I take it for granted.

Well the guy just stopped by and I showed him one of the most important things about the machine, how to accurately pinpoint. I also missed out on a Fisher Gold Bug at an estate sale that went for 125 :(

Just think of all the money you save not going to a Sports center for a workout.

Yes it has been sold, me and my dad just don't need 2 machines we feel like a pinpointer would be best at this point. We always hunt together anyways and we switch off digging.

How much did you sell it for? I was thinking about selling my too for $160 My machine has only been used for about 10 hours. I bought it at the end of Nov. 2010

I got 200 for mine but I had everything that originally came with it including the 8" coil and the 4" coil.

this hobby is what you make of it. no matter if its lookin for historic relics, coins, jewelry, gold, exercise or just an excuse to get outa the house and away from the stresses of life. every dig is an adventure even if it is only a pulltab :D

Hi Ricko !

Judging from your "sigline", you are blessed to have such a well-paying job and/or a smart investor ! Whatever, I'm sure you had to work hard for all those toys ! LOL

I have been detecting for 10 years, and have never until recently sold a single find. I recently calculated that I have over $1000 in common silver coins based on melt value alone. I am tempted for the first time to sell it for scrap because of the ridiculously high prices. I did the same recently with some of the gold that I had found so I could pay off some debts.

For me it is not about the money at all. I would not consider selling any of the more valuable coins or any of the artifacts I have found. I would sooner donate them to a museum.

It is the thrill of the hunt. The idea of finding something old. I set my goals high and that is how I pick my sites.

It is no lie when I tell you that I said to myself one day that this was going to be the day that I found my first Spanish Silver coin, and I did.

Does a fisherman fish because it is profitable? Does he do it because he needs to feed his family? No, he does it for the sport of it!

It is the same for me.

After I posted this back in Feb. I found a rare coin (see my avatar) that is worth a large amount of money. Everyone asked the same thing. Are you going to sell it? My response was that they don't give trophies out in the Metal Detecting world. This is my world series ring. Would you ask Cliff Lee to sell his world series ring? This seemed to quiet down my wife for a while.

(I may actually sell this coin at some point. The next 12 months includes my wife's 50th birthday and our 25th anniversary.)

Not sure about others.......but, there's more than $500.00 "found" pictured below:

2nd time I've posted this pic on the net. The bottom pic is all coins found from 1980-1998 excluding clad coins. I use those coins for battery money.
The rolls of coins nearest to you are common silver dimes, quarters, etc.

Yes, it's worth the investment.....if......you like finding neat stuff..........see ya yardhunter

I found well over 100 silver last year and almost $300 in clad... and that was a wayyy low count in clad for me because i was concentrating on older coins and field hunting. You can easily pay for an expensive detector. Ive paid for several and coils over the past 17 years. Can you get rich no.... but its a hobby. A lot of hobbies are a lot more expensive. Its not only the coins, but all the interesting things you start collection and acquiring history on.

If you're out looking for gold nuggets in a gold rich area like CA, AK, AZ, CO, etc. and you "know what you are doing", it's kinda hard not to make a profit if you watch your expenses. One thing I do different now than last year is make my outings at least a two day search, three days if my mom doesn't have any cancer treatment appointments. I'm saving up to $150 in gasoline and I eat like a bird (dried fruit, sunflower seeds, maybe some canned tuna).
