How do you afford high end machines?

I've came up with some other sources of income to fund my hobbies... I have a website which brings in a fair amount, I sell my Hip-Clip shovel clips on the side, and I work a full time job. I also do a lot of swapping and selling random stuff.

Buy detector A, use it for 2 years while saving up a little cash.

Trade in detector A plus the cash for better detector B.

Use detector B for 2 years while saving up a little cash.

Trade in detector B plus the cash for better detector C.

Repeat until you get the one you want most.

Find a friend who also wants a high end detector. Decide who's going to wear the mask and who is going to drive the get-away-car.

Many of us started small. I started with a White's Coinmaster and after swinging that on the beaches and saving the clad I found purchased a new higher end and it kept on that way for the next couple of years.

Now I'm addicted and cant get detecting out of my head. Stop! dont by a new detector. Its too late for me but you still have time to save yourself!

I have a good job.
Kids are grown.
I live well within my means....no debt.
I am frugal....some would say cheap.
I try to buy used whenever possible or when it make sense.
My current car is a 2009 Toyota bought used and plan to keep another 10 years.
I just sold a nearly 3000 sq ft house and moved into an 1100 sq ft house that I had as a rental. Shed the debt!
My wife and I have an allowance....$100 a month each to spend on non essentials like eating out during the the work week. I take my lunch nearly every day.
I stay out of QuickTrip.....convenience stores are the worst for sucking down your bank account. I can buy a 24 pack of water at Walmart for what QT charges for 2 bottles.

One thing a lot of people could do to raise money fast is to liquidate all of the stuff they are not using. It is shocking how much money some people have just sitting around in the form of stuff. The bulk of the American economy is based on us buying stuff, most of which we do not need.

Being able to spend a grand on any hobby without hardship would probably be a good definition of middle class.
I'm saving my clad for something, I haven't decided what, but I'm thinking it could be a nox800. I'm happy with the Atpro and could get a nox now but I can't justify spending more money just to stab park clad.

my life is one big hardship. I make less than 30 grand a year and am a single father. If I can make it work anyone can. Just takes hardwork, patience, and managing your money. This is America, land of opportunity if your willing to put in the effort.

Is there such a thing as DAS, detector acquisition syndrome, just can't stop buying metal detectors? I know that there is GAS, gear acquisition syndrome, I've run into a few of those guys along the way. If it can be bought, they will buy it.

Great post!

I have a pretty decent job with a fortune 500 company that gives nice bonuses at the end of the year. I normally buy a detector or two then if anything catches my eye.
My kids are gone, my house is paid for and my wife also works for this same company.
Some would consider me lucky and I would agree with them.
BUT I remember being an 18 year old kid with a part time job, rent took most of my paycheck and I ate a lot of boxed mac & cheese.
I found an old Garrett BFO detector for $20 at a yard sale and I ran that machine for a couple years. Used to cash in my change that I found just to buy batteries to go out and detect more. Didn't really know I was "poor" but I was sure happy.

My advice is keep on keeping on and things will fall into place.

When I started years ago I had never owned a MD. I knew I had the bug but with a family I couldn`t justify shelling out much $$ for a hobby. So, I found a great dealer and he was nice enough to let me lay away the detector I wanted. He gave me a reasonable amount of time to pay off the lay away and I complied.

My advice, find a good dealer who will let you lay away the detector you want and strike a deal.

When I decided that I wanted a detector I had some cash from some side work that I had done. Wife did not have a problem with me using the rest that I needed from our cash on hand.

Then I decided I wanted a Minelab Excalibur II. I had some custom made knives that I had acquired a number of years ago and the gentleman who made them had passed away. I sold those three knives for enough to purchase the detector and a good quality scoop and still have cash left over.

Since then I have purchased a number of items and paid for them with moneys from metal detecting. Even financed the majority of a two week vacation with money from clad digging

It takes a little time and some hard work but you can dig enough clad to purchase any detector you want.

honestly with a good detector, you can find th3 change over a period of time to get the money for that detector. equinox does the same thing as any other machine. Like I told some people when your in certain areas you dig everything especially the weird signals cause gold gives some weird signals...
