hoping to get a underwater unit soon, trying to make up my mind. in the mean time I kown I needed a scoop an didn't want too spend 75-100 bucks on 1 so I think will get the job done.I got about $8 in it. I had some scrap stainless steel laying around an the can I bought at wal-mart $4.98 stainless steel its 5" across an 6 1/2" long. the handle is galvanized pipe.its bolted on so if it goes bad in a year or so I can replace it.

You're a better man than me... Can give advice though? It needs alot more holes to drain out the sand and the lip will bend so round it off... I don't believe it will stand up to water hunting the stress on it, it will bend or break . Our scoops are pricey because they are heavy duty and need to stand up to digging in rocks and mud where the suction is intense. Just my opinion. BTW my scoop was well over the prices you posted. Most gold finds are not in the loose sand and if they were they would be very deep, over a foot down.

Seas - I saw a beach scoop and decided I could make my own with materilas I had lying around. It's out of 4" PVC tubing. The brown stuff is liquid nails. I have used it in dry sand and it works well. I would like to test it at the beach with wet sand where I am hoping it would do well.

Felix... Most wet sand gold finds are down close to a foot, I don't think you will want to expend that much energy digging lol...

My sapphire ring was well over a foot down and as fast as you dig the hole fills in and its why you need a huge strong scoop.

Cf - I tried the wet stuff at a beach my 1st outing with my previous metal detector. I did notice how difficult a task it was with my hand scoop and a sifting box. The hole would quickly refill! :( So, I stayed to the dry stuff where my set worked well! I made the PVC scoop to give the wet stuff another try. If my detector does OK on the wet stuff, and the PVC scoop is too much effort, then I'll spring for one of those expensive SS scoops. If I expend some extra energy on a dig, and I come up with a little piece of gold at the end, then I do believe it'll be worth every drop of sweat!  ;)
