I have noticed a lot of detectorists who are making metal detecting videos seem to just go through the motion of ground balancing their detector.

I was taught first to sweep an area to be sure there is no metal in that area and then ground balance the detector. But I see a lot of youtube video detectorists just go to anyplace and ground balance with out first seeing if there is any metal at that area.

Ground balancing over a metal object is not the best thing to do.

I always assumed they scanned the ground ahead of time, but just off camera.

But perhaps not.

Just because they are making you tube videos does not mean that they are doing everything correctly. Anyone can make a video. Well except for me as i do know how to start and dont even know where my video camera is hidden.

For me, it depends on the detector. I've noticed when I ground balanced some detectors the ground mineral number would change, and some it would not. Not sure if it is a matter of ground balance resolution, or the accuracy, but I seldom GB anymore unless it is a new site because the GB number will end up about the same anyway.

I find the same here as well. Besides some guys gb on the negative side and some on the positive side. It's not difficult to gb so I usually do but sometimes forget to. When I start getting a lot of falseing due to location then I'll gb first before lowering sensitivity or frequency shift
