Gold Prospecting in Black Hills! (pic heavy)

Ha! Yeah... that was my first thought too. After I thought about it for a while, I decided that it might be better to find a masonry saw and start cutting slices off of it.

I did drop the big one on the way down the hill and a piece that was about 5 inches long, 3 inches wide and a half an inch thick broke off. The metal detector did not react to that piece at all.

Also... These things weigh at least double what you would expect them too based on their size. Everyone that picked them up was really surprised about the weight.

I have a call in to the geology professor at the local university to have him take a look at them before I start cutting but my curiosity is rising. I suppose I could start looking for a masonry saw while I am waiting for the call back.

Use a diamond tipped tile saw and slice into it every inch till you get through it and then scan each on before cracking into it

great pics!!!! i've only made it out that way a couple of times on the way to visit relatives in Pocatello, Idaho. Awesome to see pics of the "interior".

Jealous too. i'd be all over that miner's shack. the well, the outhouse site etc... i'd be a bottle digging fool...if one were to find enough western whiskey and/or soda bottles...one could pretty much retire.
even the old saloon barback bottles sell for 1k-2k....

always interesting to see pics or find places like that. trying to imagine the history in that area and what it was like for that guy...

Maybe some one put a nail in a tree before it petrified:D

Seriously tho, break (or cut) in half. You will then know which half has it.
Repeat til found.
