Hello! I found this old silver coin in southern Germany and I have not had any luck identifying it. It was covered in a thick layer of brown corrosion which scraped off with a toothpick, showing the silver underneath. As you can see from the pictures it has "G 240 M" on one side, with what appear to be initials, and "Silber" (silver) on the side. The opposite side is a crest, and the only visible words along the edge are "nach dem" which hasn't helped me too much. For reference, I have found a couple other coins in the area--a 1849 6 Kreuzer and a 1793 6 Kreuzer, and an 1805 1 Kreuzer from Wurttemberg. Thanks for the help!

I don't have much to contribute. I know that "NACH DEM" translates to "AFTER THIS", and unless 240 is short for 240/1000, which I'm not used to seeing (I see 24 a lot), I have no idea what it stands for right now. I'll keep looking. I guess it could be 1/240th of something.

More accurately, in the context of the coin, "Nach Dem" translates to "According to". for example the coin text "NACH DEM FRANKF SCHLUS" which means "According to the Frankfurt Standard"

240 is the number of pfennig equal to 1 gulden, perhaps that is a hint. I can't even find what the coat of arms of the front represents. Looks like it is a composite of a few cities, but I can't find a match.

Very cool dig...

A silver German coin is way better than a German silver coin!

I don't know about that. The only German silver coins I know of are the pretty valuable Feuchtwanger cents (and the really rare Feuchtwanger 3-cent pieces). :)
