Found Indian Cent with no obverse (face)

Hello fellow members, I found an indian cent with a reverse in nice condition but the front has been ground down by the previous owner well over 100 years ago. What do you think about this and have any of you found a coin that was "defaced" like this one? This would help me identify the date and or reason that this was done, if any.

I would bet he was getting ready to have the "plain" side engraved. Remember the twenty dollar gold coin they found on the confederate submarine. Lt. Dixon had it engraved as his "life protector". Neat find.
