I've been travelling a ton, and without my metal detector (dang job anyway!), so I am posting the finds I made a few weeks ago. I missed getting here to read about what the rest of you are finding, and I am snooping throughout the site to catch up!
I was at my mom's place, a house built in the 70's but a farm that has been around for almost 150 years. I wish I could say I hit the mother load, or some long forgotten cache that Jesse James stowed in IA on his way through (she's within 1 mile of the old train tressel), but alas, it tis not so. I had my detector in my truck when I was there visiting and took it out to show my nephew who is an adventurous little kid. We searched a bit and found some nails, and then just about the time he was getting bored we struck paydirt...a Mem at 3 inches! He thought it was the coolest. I didn't have much time before dark so I searched under our old clothes line. After finding a number of spent shells (my dad owned a gun store and we frequently plunked at cans and unlucky sparrows from the yard) I hit what I thought was another shell. I almost didn't dig it, but decided to pull one more out of the ground. When I pulled out the plug and looked through it I was surprised to find a 925 ring. Nothing special, but my first! I showed my mom and she told me it was my sisters, so without thinking I sent it home with her husband (she was working) without getting a picture. I'll post it when she sends it on. I went out one last time to the clothes line and found the Scotty dog from our old Monopoly set! No matter how many times I see it I giggle a bit...
In another trip out I went to an park established in the 50's. It has walking trails and an old picnic area. I ran through a lot of trash...many old beaver tails and a heap of nails and tacks. I found two Mems, pretty recent, and then struck what I thought would be a piece of tin. When I pulled it out of theplug I almost dropped it with delight...my first religious piece. It's a crucifix, possibly part of a necklace, with quite a bit of corrosion. It seems like it is a clad piece of some sort, as the front seems to be a thin layer of copper, which is starting to flake away. The is writing, which appears to be Latin, along the outer edge. Even though it doesn't look like much, I absolutely love it. Anyone have ideas on how old it could be?
Sorry for the long post. It's nice to be back!
