I was watching the weather channel this morning and they said there is going to be a massive double brood Cicada hatch this spring here in the Midwest and as far south as northern Texas, Arkansas, Alabama. This double brood hatch hasn't happened since 1830. So, for all you culinary experts, get out your Cicada cookbooks and plan on a good turnout. :rofl2: Hey I heard they taste like chicken.:p They said the worse places will be Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin. They also stated the noise would be very annoying. Sounds like it will be a CRUNCHY spring to detect.

In one of the big hatchings in our area a while back, the ones in the distance sounded like Star Trek phasers. I think it was a hatching of the red eye variety, not the green eye ones we get most of the time.

Them things are ugly. I remember I was detecting an old football field, and a GIANT hornet lands a few feet next to me holding something. Yup it was a cicada. It then proceeded to drag it into a hole in the ground  I at first thought it was one of those murder hornets, but apparently there is a breed that feasts on cicadas.

Yeah, Cicada killers. The are big and look bad but won't harm humans.

What's that deafening buzzing in the trees ?

In a rare coincidence, (not since 1803) a 17-year cycle cicada brood and a 13-year cycle cicada brood will emerge this year at the same time.

The 5 minute video at the link below shows the affected states.

If you've never looked at a cicada up close, they are quite an amazing looking creature. Here's a link with a few photos: https://www.google.com/search?q=cic...oAL5ApgDAIgGAZIHATWgB6sW&sclient=gws-wiz-serp
