My cousin quit talking to any family member that didn’t vote for “her” last election or I’d call him.

Now thats Cryptic! "Didnt vote for HER or I'd call HIM?' Backstory and Details Man!

What I never understood about the sanctity of the dead and grave robbing in general...Just because somebody died and got buried should not afford them any other honor than the next dead guy!...Heck, half the dead Humans buried probably dont merit any more advanced form of respect or have any kind of meaning other than that they died..So how come we are supposed to have this strange abnormal respect for the dead as a Detectorist??

Half of most Humans were real B'tards when they were alive, not worthy of any kind of additional respect just because they died?...

Did Howard Carter have any respect for King Tut?? And why should he? Was King Tut a good guy deserving an eternal dirt nap unmolested? Evidently not, He's worth more dead than alive apparently...Seeings how his stiff is touring the World on display and making big money for the living grave robbers and professional stiff exhibitors and the gift shop and the museum parking lot...

Yet we say to each other..., "Dont you DARE take that Ace250 into a boneyard!" Are you trying to ruin the Image of our Sport? Seems theres Nothing inherently wrong with grave robbing, its all about presenting your finds in the proper format, and with the blessings of Nat Geo Front Cover Marketing, and of course Timing!!!...

As mud said half of them were bastards, kind of like respect your elders? I remember during the winter, snow on the ground, windy and temps in the 30's there was an old woman walking down the road. We were going to feed the cows and I said to the farmer lets give her a ride. He said hell no, that xxxxxxx did awful things to kids years ago.
A few years ago a buddy took me to a "permission" or so he said. It was an old graveyard in the country. Several locals with relatives buried there came down concerned about what we were doing there. When they seen all the beer cans and trash we picked up they were happy as hell we were there detecting. It was peaceful.. and no we didn't have big shovels.

.... any family member that didn’t vote for “her” last election or I’d call him.

OOOoooohhhh, someone here isn't being politically correct and sensitive. This will cause many people here to need counseling d/t your micro-aggression and insensitivity against them. Quick ! Repent !

I think the “her” he is referring to is Bill’s wife.

Since the piece of land that contains the grave belongs to the resident I guess you could detect there if they give you permission. Otherwise I would NOT.

Around here they used to used large cents to level the stones. They were cheaper than stone or metal wedges. They were 2 cents!
So if the creep out factor doesn't bother you and your not going to desecrate a grave site go for it.

I suggest this idea of not desecrating grave sites goes back to the "Do unto others, as you would have others do unto you" biblical quote. After all, would any of you want Mud's future great-great-great-grandchildren to stomp all over your face, while swinging a detector, (or maybe portable ground penetrating radar by that time), hoping to find something of historical or monetary value?
I don't think I'd care for that to happen to me, so I'll endeavor to not do it to someone else. Hence, the RIP acronym.
(I suppose I've just given Mud some more creative writing fodder with this post.)

I live within an hour of where you're referring to. I won't doubt the truthfulness of this story. But , I have to ask (it just begs the question) : WHY ? :?: What is someone going to get ? A ring that the deceased was buried with ?

And if this were an "all-fired concern" and risk (of cemetery locations "leaking out"), then: What's to stop persons like that from simply going out and digging up graves nilly willy everywhere else too ? I mean, there's nothing to stop anyone from going into cemeteries anywhere and everywhere, if this were something that was really fun and profitable.

So, ... I don't get it.

I would think it would be more of an issue in celebrity graves or rich areas. Just picking any old cemetery and digging it probably isnt going to yield much, just a whole lotta "Bad Ju-Ju-" BUT an old time cemetery, with POSSIBLY old valuable relics would get the attention of all kinds of crooked people. Generally, in most peoples minds, OLDER means more Valuable so if the people digging these guys up think they might find an OLD this or that, theyd probably risk the chance of bad ju ju to go for it. I personally dont need to go Pissing off the "other side" so I wouldnt mes with graves (Plus I have those things called morals .... most people today havent heard of them) but I can see why they would choose an old unknown cemetery.. kinda.

Apparently none of you have ever watch "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly"

And consider that mint condition levis from the 1800's will be worth many $1,000's of dollars....

If my friend had property with an old cemetery on it, I'd hit it without a second thought. Since there's little chance of any detector hitting a target deep enough to disturb a grave, I wouldn't worry about that in the least.

I read an article a few years back where some guy up north was arrested for grave robbing while detecting in a cemetery. Cost him thousands of dollars in attorney fees to fight the governments claim against him. I don't need an old coin that badly. Yes there are laws against desecrating a grave.
