Hi everyone -
I've been researching like crazy the past few days and think I've got it narrowed down to a Fisher F2, EuroTek Pro or Delta 4000. Don't know a lot about the coils but wonder how much happier he'd be with an 11" rather than an 8"?
I'm bouncing back and forth between Ebay and Amazon right now and trying to make a decision today.
He's a beginner but I'd like to get something he won't outgrow pretty quickly.
Very confusing info everywhere so any input would be very much appreciated!
Thanks!

Before you buy at either of those sites.

Check the sponsor list here. The link is located in the upper right side of the homepage.

Some good vendors there that can help you with your choices.

Oh, don't forget to mention this forum and the price you see advertised is NOT always the price you are going to pay.
Good luck, cheers!

You won't go wrong with the F2 with the 3 coil package or the 11". I have owned all 4 coils and I find my 11" works great for almost anything.

I'm not familiar with the other 2, but I've read very good things about the 4000 also. If that one's in your budget, I'd go with the 11" coil.

Definitely get one from a sponsor here. Call them and tell them you're a member on the forum to get the best price. You're much better off having a legit dealer on your side, especially for warranty purposes.

1 sponsor that comes to mind for me is meyersdepot .

You are smart to ask about the coil size. Most new to the hobby just assume that they want the deepest detector and the biggest coil.

Where are you located? It depends on the soil and what kind of detecting he is doing. Fields, houses, parks, beaches?

In the midwest, and wetter climates, the soil is usually richer, the coins, deeper, and a larger coil is usually better as long as there is not too much junk where he is detecting.

In mountains and the the surrounding areas and desert climates, the soil can be rocky and the coins shallower. Often in the mountains, especially in metal mining areas the depth can be limited by minerals. That is the case here. I like a medium 8" coil, as it allows me to find coins in junky spots, but also gets enough depth most of the time as that is limited anyway.

You probably can't go wrong with any of those models. The F2 has a package with multiple coils. The Eurotek Pro is newer and more modern looking at least. I have not heard quite enough about the Eurotek to recommend it over the others. The Delta has come down $100 in the last year or so and is attractive. The bounty hunter platinum is an older model that can be found for $300. It has a lot of capabilities and was originally priced $200 higher. It is not available at every retailer and is possibly a never ending closeout deal on a BH website.

All of the detectors mentioned would be fine. He can just see if he likes it and add coils later, as well.

Please don't order from Amazon unless they offer you the lowest price. (Edit - I originally said Kellyco, when you were considering Amazon and Ebay.)

Call several of the dealers on this list and order the best deal. Big Boys Hobbies seems to be very popular right now:

Try the FMDF sponsors for good price and service

Bart at Big Boys and Donald at Metal Detector Depot have pleased me to the point that I will recommend them without hesitation. The others may be just as good, but I have not yet done business with them.

Okay, I can tell you have done the research , well done. Now for the important question ... Do you have a sister ?

ROFL! nice. :D

Myself, like many others, went with the Fisher F2. There’s a terribly big long thread about it here started by respected member DIGGER27, and it alone convinced me it was a great machine.

Terribly big long thread here

After I got mine and used it a while, I wrote my own glowing review for Yahoo. Although the Fisher F2 is considered a beginner detector, it can *definitely* find the good stuff. DIGGER27 has a whole slew of gold rings nabbed by his F2, and I found a 1944 Walking Liberty half dollar at a ball park.

My glowing review on Yahoo here

I'm betting the 8" coil is going to do just stellar for his needs--at least at first. :)

If you have more money than about $200 to spend on a metal detector, I’d check into the Fisher F5 or the AT Pro by Garrett--both are doing well out there. If a screen/numbers/bells and whistles aren’t important to you, check out the Tesoro line. The Vaquero is very popular, lightweight, and DEEP. Real deep. Too deep, some say. :D

A great review site for the Tesoro Vaquero here:

A great Tesoro Vaquero review site

Welcome to the forum! :)
