hello all I just bought a Bounty Hunter tracker 4 a few days ago and the tone mode discrimination seems wrong. when i have disc at 12:00 and sensitivity at 2:00 on tone mode and i run a ball of reynold's wrap aluminium foil under the coil, it registers it with a low tone which is supposed to indicate gold or nickel. I am very new at metal decteting and need some help.
Thanks,

Thats life in md....gold depending how thin/thick like a hollow earing or a thick gold class ring ..can hit from foil to zinc penny.....never had a bh but sounds about right..run a few gold items of different sizes by the coil youll see exactlry what i mean..most people dont realize this when they buy an md ..then this gets them uninterested real quick..

Dig it all ! If you are new it will give you practice digging holes and plugging them. Gold is often disguised as nickles or foil.

GREAT advice thanks a lot for telling me about gold being disguised as other metals. 1 question, how would gold be disguised as other metals?

Your BH is working correctly. Gold is a lower conductor. Depending on its size and shape, it can sound like foil, aluminum pop tabs or even modern pennies. If you're looking for gold, get ready to dig a lot of trash. Isn't that fun!!?? Welcome to the hobby. Learn your machine and dig a LOT of signals to begin with. Stick with it. Post your finds. I look forward to seeing your progress. Welcome!

I will keep you posted!!

Welcome from South Carolina !!!!

The BH Tracker IV is a really good budget level detector, a great deal for the low price, I found a good video someone made to help those who are new to the Tracker IV -

Bounty Hunter Tracker IV Review Demonstration and How To Operate

For every thousand pull tabs you dig you might find one gold ring. If you look at pictures that tell the true story about metal detecting we dig far more trash than treasure. We just don't brag about the trash.

@stiffwrists
I will keep you posted!!

I'll be looking forward to those updates, too! Yep, we detectorists definitely dig our share of trash in between unearthing treasure, but it's all part of the fun and, as previously mentioned, part of gaining experience.

:fmdfwelcome: We're glad to have you!

Does anyone know what settings to set a bounty hunter tracker IV at to discriminate trash?

You need to spread out some goodies on the ground where there is no other metal and then add in some foil, bits of aluminum, rusty nails, etc. Go into tone mode with sensitivity about 3/4 of the way up and tone of half and listen. Notice how things change when you adjust descrim. Move objects closer to each other and see how it sounds and how you need to swing to tease out the sound of the good target.

If you don't have a bunch of trash targets, don't worry. You'll have plenty soon enough. Don't throw it all out. Keep good examples of different trash targets until you have a nice collection of those for testing purposes.

Great! thank you

Hey, I have the tracker 4. Foil in tone mode depending on the size will come up a low tone. Look on YouTube and watch the videos on how to set it up. I crank the sensitivity up until it starts chattering then slowly back it off until it hushes up. That's the best way to get the most sensitivity out of it In tone mode. I put the disc up to the little screw at about 1 o clock. This allows for gold to get picked up (low tone) and anything from zinc pennies to silver rings (high tones) I've since upgraded, but Amanda still uses the bounty hunter from time to time tho and she kicks my butt out there. Actually found most of our cool finds with the bounty hunter. Our first gold ring, 4 silver rings, a bicentennial Eisenhower dollar and all kinds of other cool finds. Its a great machine and if you set it up like I tried to explain, its pretty dang reliable too! Garbage happens in this hobby tho lol. Even with vdi read outs and target indicators. .. I still dig up plenty of can slaw. .. the fun part about the bounty hunter is you truly never know whats under the coil. Sometimes it's something pretty darn cool!

If you take that same piece of foil and fold it over all different kinds of ways you'll get different responses from your detector. Signal will depend on size, shape and thickness.

My first machine was a Bounty Hunter, I found a lot of good silver coins and .925 silver. A great machine. Then I upgraded to an ATP Garrett,,and finding lots of silver and .925 silver too,,,and still another great machine, but still no gold ring. In fact most machines have “pull tabs” and “gold” right next to each other. Go for the silver to keep yourself interested and digs lot of tabs to find the gold. HH
